How Much is a Bakers Work Table?
Finding the Right Industrial-work-tables for You
From drafting tables to preparation tables to kitchen islands and more, the collection of antique and vintage industrial tables and work tables on 1stDibs features a wide range of robust furnishings that fit seamlessly into modern interiors.
Work tables, just like most tables, have evolved considerably over the years.
More than 1,000 years before iconic American furniture brand Herman Miller would help shape the way we work — and later, how we live at home — monks who lived and worked in medieval-era monasteries stood at what you might call crude writing desks, translating religious texts and copying them by hand.
While those who practiced the art of handwritten letters definitely needed a suitable writing desk, the world wouldn’t see proper roll-top desks and the like until the 19th century. Owing to the work of architects such as Antoni Gaudí, these monastery “desks” were essentially work tables. (Chairs, much less actual desk chairs, weren’t a part of the workspace until the Renaissance.) It was a far cry from the cozy home office that affords many of us the opportunity to work remotely today.
Near the end of the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution brought with it the founding of mills and factories, and hand production methods gave way to machinery and mass production. Factory workers needed sturdy industrial tables to perform tasks that required precision and to support the manufacturing industry. Spare work tables — durable and easy to clean — were constructed of metal and wood and became essential on assembly lines and in packing facilities. Today, industrial-style furniture celebrates the past even as it suggests vigor, productivity and brawn.
Aside from how well antique and vintage industrial tables and work tables will fit in your industrial-style interior — think raw brick walls, exposed steel beams and oak floors — these furnishings have practical uses. They’re a must-have item for a number of creative endeavors: They’re an ideal food-prep surface in your kitchen or an efficient work surface for any kind of hands-on workshop or painting and drawing studio. With some creativity, you can turn a vintage wood industrial table or work table into a desk, dining room table or coffee table.
At 1stDibs, we love the industrial-style furniture trend, and here you can find a wide range of antique and vintage industrial tables and work tables as well as other furnishings that will look wonderful in your heavenly loft space.

- What is a Baker table?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022The term baker table has more than one meaning. When capitalized as Baker table, the term refers to a piece made by Baker Furniture Company, an American furniture manufacturer. - How does a table lamp work?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2024How a table lamp works begins with its cord, which gets plugged into an electrical outlet that provides a source of energy. Halogen and incandescent bulbs contain filaments. The filament in a bulb is a conductor of electricity. It’s attached to contacts made of metal that are connected to a power supply. This allows for electricity to flow through it. When the electrical current cycles through the filament, this component gets quite hot and emits light. Find a large collection of vintage table lamps on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 24, 2021An extendable table is a great way to make use of or save space, as you wish. An extendable table is constructed in a way that the tabletop pulls apart to reveal the center layer as a usable, extendable option. Extendable tables mostly include flaps that click in place to keep from collapsing. Find a variety of tables on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022How the impossible floating table works relies on tension. Artisans carefully craft the table using laws of physics. When the top is in precisely the right position, tension forces keep it balanced, so it appears to hover in midair. Shop a variety of tables on 1stDibs.
- How does a drop leaf table work?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertAugust 24, 2021A drop-leaf table features a fixed section and one or more foldable sections. The well-made hinges hold the fixed and foldable sections and allow the leaves to pop up. These sections are anchored with the help of swing-out legs for secure placement. - 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023Many chairs can work with a Tulip table. The Tulip armchair, for example, was part of Eero Saarinen’s Pedestal collection of armless chairs, stools, Tulip side tables and more. The series, produced for Knoll, was a mid-century modernist exercise in simplifying, and Tulip chairs, with their curvy contours, match Tulip side tables and Pedestal dining tables very well. However, you can also try other mid-century modern chairs to see what works best in your space. Shop a collection of mid-century modern dining chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023A possum belly baker's table is a wooden table designed to be used for prep work in kitchens. Its defining characteristic is its curved lower drawer. - 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021A round coffee table usually goes well with a sectional as it is easier to navigate around, especially since surrounded by seating.
