Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Settee With Back
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The first person who called a settee a settee is unknown. Historians have traced the name back to the Middle Ages when the furniture first came into production. Settee comes from the Old English word “setl,” which described a long wooden bench. On 1st 1stDibs, find a selection of antique settees.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A borne settee is a circular, upholstered Victorian ottoman-style sofa with three or four seat divisions. It provides a backrest in its central cone element and has also been referred to as a “conversation seat.” Borne settees are frequently situated in hotel lobbies and galleries. On 1stDibs, find a range of antique and vintage settees.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A settee is a padded seat with a back and armrests (which are often cushioned) that may accommodate two or more people sitting or reclining. Settees aren’t as wide as couches or sofas. A settee is more intimate and offers more sitting room than an armchair. On 1stDibs, find a range of antique and vintage settees.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024
What a settee is called in English varies. Americans typically refer to this type of upholstered furniture as a sofa if it has a more upscale, formal look. Casual styles of settees are typically called couches. However, some people do use the terms sofa and couch interchangeably. Settees are typically small seats that can fit two or more people, but they aren’t as wide as couches or sofas. A settee is more intimate and offers more sitting room than an armchair. Find antique settees for sale on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The difference between a sofa and a settee is the length. Both a sofa and a settee seat three or more people, but a sofa is generally longer.

  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024
A settee looks similar to a sofa in the U.S. It typically features a sturdy frame clad in leather or textile upholstery and rests on a sturdy base or legs. The main difference between a settee and a sofa is proportions. A settee is usually lower and shorter than a conventional sofa. In India and some other countries, the term settee is actually a synonym for sofa and describes the same type of furniture. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of settees.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The difference between a sofa and a settee is largely a matter of personal opinion. Technically, the two words refer to the same thing. However, settee is no longer a commonly used term. As a result, some people call antique couches “settees,” and newer examples of the furniture “sofas.” On 1stDibs, find a large selection of antique and vintage sofas and settees.

The logo that is two Cs back to back is the logo of Chanel. You'll see the logo prominently featured in the designs of Chanel handbags, apparel, jewelry and other pieces. The pair of Cs pays tribute to Coco Chanel, who founded the French luxury fashion house in 1910. Chanel designed the logo herself and first unveiled it in 1925. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of Chanel bags, apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024
What is on the back of a mirror varies. Most mirrors feature a metal backing fashioned out of nickel, tin, silver, chromium or aluminum. Manufacturers typically apply film-forming paint to the metal to reduce the risk of corrosion and extend the life of the mirror. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of mirrors.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The difference between a settee and a loveseat is the amount of people each can fit. A settee can fit two or more people and can be a part of a sectional sofa. A loveseat is meant for only two and is usually a standalone piece.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
The difference between high-back and low-back sofas is that the former has a taller backrest than the latter. Some people, especially tall men and women, feel that a high-back sofa is more comfortable because the taller back offers more support for the shoulders and neck. Low-back sofas are popular picks for open-plan interiors, as they allow sightlines to be maintained across a space. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of high-back and low-back sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 15, 2024
The back of a chair is called a chair back. In some cases, you may see people use modifiers to describe the styles of chair backs. For example, a chair with two crisscrossing cross rails is an X-back or cross back, while a chair with a series of horizontal cross rails positioned parallel to one another is a ladder back. Explore a wide range of chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Curved back sofas are also known as conversation sofas or crescent sofas. Curved sofas are highly coveted as comfortable seating as well as for being a unique seating option. Shop a wide selection of curved back sofas on 1stDibs.
