How Much is a Wool Trench Coat?
Finding the Right Coats-outerwear for You
There is a stylish garment for anywhere in the universe, and on 1stDibs, finding the right vintage and designer coats and outerwear doesn’t have to feel like a journey to the ends of the earth.
Outerwear includes many types of garments aside from the standard coat. From capes, gilets, jackets and cloaks to raincoats and kimonos, fashion designers have long been preparing us for the elements, and outerwear in general has changed and evolved significantly over time.
A lot of the coat styles in our closets, such as the durable Navy-inspired peacoat, were popularized by soldiers who battled aggressive climes in their regulation field jackets and parkas — indeed, keeping troopers comfortable guided the design of the military surplus garments that have often become buzzy fashion trends. Even today, owing to the likes of Burberry, a luxury fashion house that is among the originators of the trench coat worn by British officers during World War I, the trench remains a timeless style, now available in a range of colors that can be worn throughout the year.
While women in late 1700s England donned an adaptation of a men’s jacket called a spencer — the likeness of which could be spotted in Ralph Lauren’s ready-to-wear collections hundreds of years later — designers hadn’t widely been crafting outerwear specifically for women. Generally, the outerwear of choice for the fashionable, well-heeled lady prior to the 1800s usually consisted of capes, shawls and stoles. By the mid-1800s, women were wearing overcoats with multiple layered collars popularized by men (often called a Garrick coat in England), and as women entered the workforce during the 1920s, hemlines climbed, jewelry was prominent and fashion conventions were broken across the board.
Thankfully, the 20th century’s tradition of challenging the norm continues steadfast in today’s outerwear fashions. Contemporary designers certainly find inspiration in 1960s and 1970s coats by Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent and Bonnie Cashin, but unisex options abound in modern creations that take both function and style into account. Find what inspires you in the full range of vintage and designer coats and outerwear available for sale on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024The difference between a trench coat and a jacket is that one is a specific type of outerwear, while the other is a general term. A jacket is any piece of outerwear with a hemline that falls above the hips, while longer toppers are called coats. A trench coat is a coat usually made from a durable material like thick canvas or wool. Most have a double-breasted button closure, a notched collar, strap epaulets at the shoulders, side pockets and a belt. Find a large collection of trench coats, jackets and other outerwear on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 30, 2024Many fashion lovers believe that a trench coat is worth investing in. Since they first emerged in the early 19th century, trench coats have remained consistently popular because they provide protection from the elements without adding too much weight and bulk to ensembles. Because of their long history, trench coats are also timeless and tend to remain in style season after season, even as other trends shift. However, there are many types of coats that you can consider. Thinking about where and when you'll wear it, your preferences regarding fit and style and the typical weather conditions in your area can help you select the right coat. Find a wide range of trench coats on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The original Burberry trench coat was the Tielocken coat. Thomas Burberry patented the men's coat in 1912. Since then, the British luxury fashion house has become known for producing coats in its style for both men and women. You'll find a variety of Burberry trench coats on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 10, 2025The company famous for trench coats is Burberry. Its Tielocken coat — a forerunner to the trench coat — was patented in 1912, featuring just a button at the collar and a single strap. British officers during World War I donned trench coats designed by the likes of Burberry, Aquascutum and other firms. The design of Burberry’s classic trench demonstrated a consideration of the demand for both weather protection and function on the battlefield, with every element having its purpose, whether it was the epaulets for an officer’s rank or the gun flap at the breast. When the now-familiar check — a plaid check with black, white and red stripes on a background of beige — was added as a lining during the 1920s, a fashion icon was born. - Are 100% wool coats worth it?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertSeptember 9, 2024Whether 100% wool coats are worth it is largely a matter of personal opinion. However, many people do prefer wool coats. Not only are they warm in cold weather, but they can also repel light rain or snow. Plus, wool lovers often appreciate the natural feel and beauty of the material. - 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021Plaid wool coats are made of Mackinaw cloth, which is a heavy and dense water-repellent woolen cloth, similar to Melton cloth but using a tartan pattern often referred to as "buffalo plaid." On 1stDibs you will find many varieties of plaid wool coats.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 29, 2024To tell if a wool coat is high quality, first check the fabric content label. The highest-quality coats will be made primarily of wool, while lower-quality coats will usually blend wool with other less expensive fibers like acrylic. Next, take a close look at the stitching all over the piece. Well-made coats will have even, tight stitching throughout. Finally, examine the buttons or other fasteners. Loose buttons, snaps and zippers that are difficult to operate may indicate a lower-quality coat. Find a range of wool coats on 1stDibs.
