Achille Castiglioni Tables

Italian, 1918-2002

Milanese designer and architect Achille Castiglioni sought to inject personality into all of his work, and found deep inspiration in everyday objects. A legend of Italian mid-century modernism, he created iconic, universally loved table lamps, chairs and other lighting and furniture with his likeminded brothers during the postwar years.

There was the Snoopy lamp, which brings to mind the unmistakable Peanuts character, while the shape of a common street lamp inspired the design behind the Arco floor lamp. Elsewhere, the Toio floor lamp — a provocative fixture in any living room — was made with automotive parts as well as run-of-the-mill recreational gear.

Castiglioni studied the classics at Liceo Classico Giuseppe Parini, art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and finally architecture and design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. After graduating in 1944, Castiglioni began working with his brothers Pier Giacomo and Livio at the studio they cofounded with classmate Luigi Caccia Dominioni.

Livio left to pursue lighting design and sound technology, leaving Achille and Pier Giacomo to continue to collaborate on various projects. One such design was the iconic Taraxacum hanging lamp for FLOS which featured a resin “cocoon” created with sprayed plastic polymers that protects its steel core and allows for the diffusion of light.

Castiglioni won Italy’s highest award for industrial design — the Compasso d’Oro — seven times, and the Museum of Modern Art was home to his first individual retrospective in the United States. Castiglioni later taught at the Polytechnic University of Turin and at Polytechnic in Milan.

Castiglioni’s designs remain timeless. Some of them can be found in Tokyo’s Living Design Center Ozone, the Triennale di Milano and the Hangaram Art Museum at the Seoul Arts Center.

Country English Pastry Shop Potential Kitchen Island, Marble Top All Original
Located in Chicago, IL
Located just outside the Cotswold’s in England, we were fortunate enough to discover this incredible all original marble topped pastry kitchen island, with an old cream painted wooden frame, with a slatted undertier. Finding old, completely unmolested, all original tables that can be substituted for a modern generic new kitchen island, is something that we, at Old Plank have specialized in for over 30-years. The trick has always been to locate an antique potential kitchen island, that was used commercially, yet finished on all four-sides and if you’re real lucky, it’ll have a marble top. This antique English kitchen island...

Folding wooden table “Trac” by Achille Castiglioni for BBB Emmebonacina 70s, 80s
By Achille Castiglioni, BBB Bonacchina
Located in Padova, IT
Achille Castiglioni with Trac re-enacts the notion of folding table, experimenting with his workhorse: the redesign of anonymous objects that have survived use and time and can be enhanced with minimal modifications. With a modernity that is ahead of his time, he experiments with concepts such as multifunctionality, transformability, mobility. Lightweight, square in shape, Trac has simple, elegant folding legs and refined joints that are easy to manoeuvre. Ideal for storage once folded. Achille Castiglioni, son of the sculptor Giannino and Livia Bolla, he graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1944; after graduating he worked in the studio of the older brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo in Milan, devoting himself to urban planning, architecture, exhibitions and product design projects. In 1944, together with his brothers, he took part in the VII Triennale di Milano. Achille Castiglioni's design has always been based on a search for functionality, also through the functional reuse of objects already present in production. In 1956 he was one of the founders of ADI, the Association for Industrial Design. BBB emmebonacina, with its 50 years of experience in the production of contemporary furniture, can boast a collection that brings together many of the successes of Italian design in the world, which place it in a prominent position in the international production scene. The spirit of the company, which can be traced back to the desire to interpret contemporary culture, is demonstrated by excellent collaborations such as those, among many others, with Achille Castiglioni, Paolo Ferrari, De Pas D'Urbino Lomazzi, Italo Luppi, Carlo Santi, Giogio Decursu, Laura Griziotti...
