Sir Edwin Landseer Art
British, 1802-1873
Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was one of the most celebrated British artists of the 19th century, famed for his emotionally resonant portrayals of animals, particularly dogs, deer, and horses. Born in London into a family of engravers, Landseer was a prodigious talent, exhibiting at the Royal Academy at just 13 years old.
He quickly gained acclaim for his ability to anthropomorphize animals, imbuing them with a level of emotion and character usually reserved for human subjects. His works resonated deeply with Victorian audiences, who found moral and emotional narratives in his paintings.
Landseer’s most iconic works include:
“The Monarch of the Glen” (a red deer stag, symbol of the Scottish Highlands)
“A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society” (a portrait of a Newfoundland dog)
“Saved” and “Dignity and Impudence”, both sentimental studies of dogs
He was also commissioned to design the bronze lions that sit at the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.
Landseer was knighted in 1850 and appointed official court painter to Queen Victoria, who admired his work immensely. Despite personal struggles with mental health later in life, his influence on British art — especially animal portraiture — remains profound.to
