Frank Stanley Herring, a portrait painter, was born in 1894 in Pen Argyl. He studied under various artists like Charles Hawthorne, George Bridgman, Bartlett, G. Tyler, Forsberg, Grell, Stickroth and Paul. His works were exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Georgia State College for Women, High Museum of Art and Mecklenburg Court House. In 1946, Frank Herring and his wife, Francis Herring, established the Burnsville Painting Classes in conjunction with another artist, Edward Shorter. Located in the old Mount Mitchell's Boys camp in Burnsville, the school grew to national recognition over 20 years, continuing until 1966. At that time with the blessings of the Herrings, the school was transitioned over to artists Everett Kivette and John Bryans who carried on the tradition. The school is still in existence. He died in 1966, in Burnsville.
