Calvin Lai's art is a mixture of medicine, meditation, and personal growth. He found early on that drawing was something he loved, and to make a picture appear lifelike became his goal. Through constantly drawing, his work began to breath, and his fascination with value and perspective led Calvin to become a student of realism. Eventually he moved from where he grew up in Los Angeles to San Francisco. There he studied drawing and printmaking at San Francisco State University. In addition, I have had great help from Marten to prepare me well for my own entrance exam for the Classical Academy in Groningen.
On a Friday evening, after the classes at the Academy, I arranged a meeting with Marten at Bedum. Driving through the province of Groningen always has something of a vacation, after all everything is different than in Brabant.
It's nice to hear how Marten's experiences were during and after his study at the Classical Academy. He has quickly become successful, his style, craftsmanship and choice of subject appeals to many people. Yet Marten, he says, does not want to repeat himself. He is always looking for the way of painting that suits him at that moment.
