Rezalia C Thrash was the first African-American woman to exhibit her artwork in a juried Texas Art Show. Thrash, a teacher, painter, and club woman. She was born in Waco and educated in Texarkana. She held a Bachelor's degree from Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College and Wilberforce University and a Master's degree in art education from Greeley State Teacher's College in Colorado. Her husband, N. N. Thrash was the long-time bell captain at Dallas's Southland Hotel. Thrash taught in the Dallas school district at several elementary schools and Lincoln High School from 1922–67. She received a distinguished service award in art education from the Dallas Independent School District Over her lifetime. Thrash’s affiliations included a number of professional organizations and women's clubs, including the Priscilla Art Club and the Credenza Art Club. Thrash was an art teacher at B.F. Darrell Elementary School in 1935 when her watercolor, Parrots, was among the 162 works chosen from 383 entries for inclusion in the Seventh Annual Dallas Allied Arts Exhibition. It was the first work by a black artist to be shown in an integrated show. Although an important advance, its effect on the black community was limited by the fact that the show was only open to them for two hours during its four-week run, from 8:00-10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. Thrash also showed paintings in the 1948 and 1950 exhibitions.

A Wooded Path
Located in London, GB
Oil on canvas, signed lower right 11 4/5 x 12 9/10 inches (30 x 32 cm) Gilt frame Nora Summers was a British painter, printmaker and photographer who grew up in an engineering family. She studied at Bristol School of Art before progressing on to the Slade School in London where she developed under the teaching of Henry Tonks from 1907-1910. Her work was often characterised by its serene, still quality, here her landscape captures a forest scene as a poignant documentation of the moment- a fleeting memory, frozen in time. She was predominantly shown in the NEAC as well as the Walker Art Gallery. Summer’s contemporaries were captivated by her striking look and modernist style, many of whom used her as a muse for some of their works such as Augustus John, Henry Lampard, and Walter Russel. After meeting her husband Gerald Summers at Slade, the two honeymooned in Italy where they both worked closely on topographical paintings and etchings of Italian...

Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse)
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This painting is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse), c. 1930s, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches, signed lower right; presented in a newer silver painted frame About the Painting Writing about an exhibition of Charles W. Adams’ work at the Eighth Street Art Gallery in the mid-1930s, Emily Grenauer observed in The World-Telegram that the artist’s paintings were “distinguished for their solid form, well organized design and sumptuous color” and the art critic for The Herald Tribune found Adam’s work “a strong, formal realization of his subject . . . he paints with vital emphasis on structure and composition.” Although we do not know which works these critics referenced, it is likely they were writing about paintings like Jefferson Market Library (Courthouse). With its carefully designed reality, strong angles, solid forms, and well-disciplined puffs of smoke in the background, Adams presents a highly structured version of the Greenwich Village landmark, the Jefferson Market Library, which was a courthouse at the time Adams completed this work. The Jefferson Market Library was a prized subject for downtown painters, including the Ashcan School painter, John Sloan, the modernist, Stuart Davis, and the precisionist, Francis Criss...
