Duncanson, Joseph Ketner and comes with an authentication letter. This painting has exhibited and is published in Robert S. Duncanson and His Courageous Southern Travels. This painting is one of the many beautiful southern landscape scenes that Robert S. Duncanson painted in his courageous travels south. "Robert S. Duncanson born in 1819, was an African American Hudson River School artist who painted the south before the Civil War, until his death in 1872. Although widely famous during his lifetime, this forgotten artist’s courageous journey through the antebellum south has never before been exhibited or researched until now. His brilliance was in creating captivating landscape paintings that come alive to the viewer, by focusing on the minute details of nature and of the stories he wished to communicate. Under a Divided Sky, Seascape of Shipwreck
By Alfred Thompson Bricher
Located in Greenwich, CT
A romantic and moving work by on of America's top Coastal painters of the 19th century! A large-scale and impressive work with lovely light. This painting can hold a large spot. It is in a classic 19th century marine style frame, 22 Karat gold. The size of the canvas inside the frame is 30.25 x 50.25. Bricher sketched and painted along the New England coast, depicting long stretches of shore under varying skies of Massachusetts and Maine. Under a Divided Sky is a departure from his often calm or fair views. Bricher focused upon an old wreck that is a moving and poetic reminder of man’s vulnerability in relation to the vicissitudes of the sea. To heighten this feeling, Bricher has imparted a contrast to the sky. It is either a clearing as a storm departs, which would be a metaphor for hope or the storm is impending, which parallels the tragedy at hand. Bricher was a second-generation Hudson River painter but as his career progressed he became engrossed with depictions of the coast as opposed to the landscapes he often did in the 1860’s and early 1870’s. The artists that had the greatest influence on him were Martin Johnson Heade, Fitz Hugh Lane...

"Southern Gentleman" Unusal White Subject. Known for his African American
By William Aiken Walker
Located in San Antonio, TX
William Aiken Walker 1839-1921 Galveston Artist Image Size: 20 x 16 Frame Size: 24 x 20 Medium: Oil "Southern Gentleman" Exhibited Piece. The painting has been lined many, many years ago. A pretty good old school job. The frame is in good shape. Some separating at the corner joints. I can correct that as I own a frame shop as well as the gallery. It was exhibited in 1972 at the Louisiana State Museum. Including photos of the exhibition label as well as the loan inventory number. As you probably know this painting is much larger than most of his works. It is also the only white subject that I have seen. I have heard about another of a girl that sold at a small Louisiana Auction several years ago. Please let me know if you have further questions. Regards, Charles Morin Bio: A genre painter, William Aiken Walker, is primarily known for his expressions of plantations, cotton fields, African Americans, and dock scenes. The son of a prominent cotton agent, he was a true Southerner, born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1838. Walker completed his first painting at twelve and painted until his death in 1921. Although he studied in Dusseldorf sometime during the 1860s, he was primarily self-taught. A social and friendly man, Walker often entertained friends with stories of his southern travels, which included Florida, Galveston, Texas, and the Carolinas. It is thought that he was somewhat inspired by European artistic subjects and styles, and also made at least one trip to that continent. Currier and Ives published several of his color lithographs in 1884; most notably "Cotton Plantation on the Mississippi" and "The Levee, New Orleans...
