The print, titled Donkere Brahma Poutra’s, originates from Geïllustreerd Hoenderboek, an Illustrated Poultry Book published in 1888 by Elsevier. Authored by Julius Volschau and adapted for Dutch readers by Dr. A. C. Oudemans Jzn., this book provided valuable knowledge on poultry breeding and care, reflecting the popularity of ornamental and productive breeds in the late 19th century. The Brahma chicken is believed to have originated from birds imported from China and further developed in the United States in the mid 19th century. The Dark Brahma variety, characterized by its intricate feather pattern, was highly prized among poultry enthusiasts.
