NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

Neoclassical Plaster Urn Table Lamp Greek Figural Statue Reliefs 20th Century

Located in Lambertville, NJ

An exceptional pair of mid-to-late 20th-century Neoclassical style table lamps, masterfully crafted after the famous antiquity known as the Townley Vase. These striking statement lamps feature covered campana-form urns adorned with high-relief Greek and Roman mythological figures capturing a lively Bacchanalian festival. Each urn is flanked by elegant scrolled architectural loop handles and capped with a fluted lid, resting atop an integrated, beautifully textured diamond-quilted (waffle-patterned) square plinth pedestal base. Rendered in a crisp matte white plaster bisque or finish, this pair perfectly balances grand Classical Revival scale with clean, minimalist texture. Design Details • Inspiration: Modeled after the iconic 2nd-century Roman marble Townley Vase currently housed in the British Museum. • Motif: Intricate high-relief sculptural frieze depicting Pan, satyrs, and maenads in a classical celebration. • Base: Geometric diamond-patterned plinth adds a subtle modern contrast to the classical relief work. • Period: 20th Century • Styles: Neoclassical, Classical Revival, Hollywood Regency, Grand Tour Neoclassical lamps, Townley Vase urns, Bacchanalian relief, Roman mythological table lamps, pair of vintage plaster lamps, Greek revival lighting, 20th century classical lamps, Hollywood Regency urn lamps...

A NEOCLASSICAL BRUTALIST Wrought Iron FIRE SCREEN FRAME ARTS&CRAFTS France 1950
A NEOCLASSICAL BRUTALIST Wrought Iron FIRE SCREEN FRAME ARTS&CRAFTS France 1950

A NEOCLASSICAL BRUTALIST Wrought Iron FIRE SCREEN FRAME ARTS&CRAFTS France 1950

By Atelier Marolles, Mathieu Matégot

Located in PARIS, FR

Large French Wrought-Iron and Heavy Perforated-Metal Fireplace Screen, circa 1940–1950 An important large-scale French fireplace screen of particularly generous width, crafted from wrought iron and heavy perforated metal. With its substantial proportions and strongly defined design, it functions as much as a decorative object in its own right as a practical fireplace accessory. Its composition stands at the crossroads of several stylistic influences. The design retains something of late Art Deco and French Neoclassicism of the 1940s, visible in the overall symmetry, the presence of the framing structure, and the traditional mastery of wrought iron. Yet this discipline is softened by the sensuality of the lines, the free movement of the upper section, and above all by the large, generously coiled scrolls that extend from the uprights and form the feet. These curves give the screen an almost calligraphic presence. The iron appears to unfold freely around the central panel, opposing the regularity of the perforated grid with a succession of fluid, continuous movements. This freedom of form already places the piece firmly within the aesthetic of the 1950s, when French furniture and decorative arts gradually moved away from strict geometry toward more organic and sensual lines. The central panel is not made from thin sheet metal, but from a substantial, heavy-gauge perforated metal, characteristic of a type of construction still strongly associated with the 1940s. Its physical density clearly distinguishes the piece from the much lighter perforated sheets that would later become common. Yet the repeating pierced pattern introduces remarkable transparency and naturally invites comparison with the experiments developed during the 1950s by Mathieu Matégot, particularly his exploration of perforated metal and its ability to visually dematerialize the mass of an object. Placed in front of a fire, this perforated surface comes fully to life: the movement of the flames is seen through the grid and fragmented by the repetition of the pattern, creating a genuine optical effect. As the fire shifts, the points of light appear to move and vibrate across the surface of the screen. The perforated metal therefore acts as a visual filter between the viewer and the flames, producing an almost kinetic effect, constantly animated by their movement. A comparison with Jean Royère may also be suggested in this balance between structure and fantasy: less for the use of perforated metal itself than for the sensuality of the curves, the freedom of the line, and the expressive character of the large scrolls, which transform a functional object into a particularly lively decorative composition. This large fireplace screen...
