ART DECO FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK Anton Grath (Austrian, b. 1881) patinated and burnished bronze over marble signed "Anton Grath" and foundry marking monogrammed "HW" within an "H" to right side of base Circa 1925 Item # 203AXG01W A powerful figural clock of a partially nude male and female raising offerings of a laurel wreath and an empty vessel, they face one another before the bold architectural display of the clock flanked by coned finials. They are loosely symmetrical in garb, the burnished bronze capes flowing gently around and before them. The circular face of the clock rests on a pair of sleeping lions over a textured bronze rectangular plinth with a burnished bronze bas-relief of a young woman lying in the grasses of a setting sun raised on a variated marble base. This model was acquired formerly at the Sotheby's, New York sale on April 14th 2008, [Sale N08427, lot 155, achieved $ 5,000 USD] and the patina was enhanced at some point in the last fourteen years to include the parcel-burnished highlights in the figures. The right side of the base includes the signature and a monogrammed foundry mark (HW within an H). A very fine period example. Artist Listings & Bibliography: *E. 19th Century, French Gilt Bronze and Marble Mantel Clock Garniture Set

19th Century, French Gilt Bronze and Marble Mantel Clock Garniture Set

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

A refined French mantel clock garniture set executed in gilt bronze and white stone, dating to the 19th century. The ensemble consists of a central pendulum clock accompanied by a matching pair of decorative urns. The architectural composition with classical columns reflects the neoclassical taste characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The clock features an enamel dial with black numerals and finely shaped hands, housed within a cylindrical case suspended between two columns. The case is adorned with cast gilt bronze mounts incorporating floral and classical decorative motifs, while the pendulum is decorated with a sun mask motif. The accompanying urns echo the design language of the clock, combining white stone bodies with gilt bronze mounts and twin handles, creating a balanced three-piece composition suitable for mantel or console display. Attribution and dating remain based on stylistic characteristics visible in the set. The exact stone type has not been professionally tested. Dimensions Clock: Height: 43 cm / 16.9 in Width: 24 cm / 9.45 in Depth: 12 cm / 4.72 in Urns (each): Height: 31 cm / 12.2 in Width: 14 cm / 5.5 in Depth: 11 cm / 4.33 in Condition Very good antique condition for its age. Minor chips on the stone bases, visible on corners of each piece Small crack on the back of the clock base (visible in photos) Gilt bronze shows natural age-related patina and tonal variations The front glass is missing The mechanism has been started and tested over several days, during which the clock ran consistently and kept operating. The striking function does not currently activate. The movement appears complete and remains in very good visual condition; however, as with all antique clocks...
