Flying Mercury in green marble copied from the famous work of Giambologna
Located in Prato, IT
Green serpentine marble sculpture Late 19th century Height approx. 88 cm. The flying mercury and the bronzes While he was still busy working on the fountain in piazza Maggiore, the papal delegate Cesi asked Giambologna for a statue to be placed in the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, seat of the ancient and prestigious Bolognese university; he should have painted a bronze depicting the god Mercury with his index finger stretched towards the sky, a symbol of the divine origin of knowledge, which would have served as a warning to all students. The project was never completed, but Giambologna elaborated a model preserved at the Civic Museum of Bologna, which is only the first of the numerous bronzes with the same subject made by the artist, defined precisely as flying Mercury. In later versions, the sculptor transformed Mercury into a much more dynamic figure reaching upwards, as if ready to take flight, giving it an unprecedented freedom of movement and lightness. When he returned to Florence, the sculptor certainly proposed it to the Medici, who enthusiastically immediately ordered one to be sent to Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg, as a diplomatic gift for the ongoing negotiations of the wedding between Francesco and Giovanna, sister of the sovereign. Giambologna replied with the two bronzes preserved in Vienna and Dresden and in 1580 cast the large Mercury now exhibited in the Bargello, originally intended for the loggia of the villa of Cardinal Ferdinando dei Medici to crown a fountain placed in the center of a magnificent decorative complex; the only variant with respect to the previous examples is constituted by the head of Zephyr placed under the foot of the god and from which a breath of wind blows it upwards, accentuating the sense of immateriality. In addition to the successful invention of the flying Mercury, Giambologna acquired immense fame by making numerous other bronzes for the Florentine collectors of the time; his first patron, Bernardo Vecchietti must certainly have owned many, given to him in part by the sculptor in exchange for his protection, but around the 1880s it can be said that there was no collector who did not aspire to own a work by Giambologna, especially those of small format. The development of this trend in Florence is largely due to the artistic passions of the Grand Duke Francesco I, who with the creation of environments such as the Studiolo in Palazzo Vecchio and the Tribuna degli Uffizi, provided new criteria for the exhibition of the works, pushing all collectors to imitate his extraordinary collection. In the Studiolo, in addition to the painted tables that decorated the doors of the cupboards filled with all kinds of things, there were 8 niches containing bronze figures of divinities; Giambologna painted the one depicting Apollo (1573-75), with the characteristic serpentine pose and beautifully finished. The placement of the statuette in the niche was no longer an impediment to the plurality of views as Giambologna endowed it with a sort of mechanism that allowed it to rotate. For the Tribune he instead created the six Labors of Hercules (1576-1589), small silver sculptures...

A bronze portrait of Sir Winston Churchill by Rufus Martin, 2023
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A bronze portrait of Sir Winston Churchill by Rufus Martin, 2023 This head and shoulders bronze bust is instantly recognizable as Sir Winston Churchill. He is wearing a British Warm greatcoat with epaulettes and has a half-smoked cigar in the left hand resting on his hip. His right hand is raised in his trade mark V-for-Victory salute. Signed ‘Rufus Martin 1/12’. Sir Winston Churchill (1874 –1965) was a British politician, army officer and writer. He was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, when he led Britain to victory in the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. Churchill represented five constituencies during his career as a Member of Parliament. Ideologically an economic liberal and imperialist, for most of his career he was a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955, but from 1904 to 1924 was a member of the Liberal Party. This portrait of Churchill by Rufus Martin is striking for its juxtaposition of this famous historical subject and the free and contemporary choice of presentation. Churchill’s tenure during the Second World War infused the nation with calm and confidence, providing the British people with strong leadership during its darkest hours. Martin succeeds in portraying Churchill’s unshakeable belief in a successful outcome for the Allies through his defiant stance, unwavering gaze and Victory V gesture. Together with the recognizable “Bulldog” facial features and broad shoulders, this bust captures the subject in terms of character as well as being an accurate physical portrait . Rufus Martin trained at Wimbledon College of the Arts, London, though his aptitude for 3D design and sculpture was apparent from a very young age. His mother, a portrait painter, showed him the portrait sculptures of Augusta Savage, Jacob Epstein and Augustine Rodin, which inspired him to create a bust of his late mentor, Michael Howells. He sculpts ‘intriguing individuals, always hoping to capture some element of their past or current struggles and to create something for the good of the community they inhabit and wherever possible for posterity’ – an ambition he has most successfully fulfilled with this powerful portrait. After leaving college in 2017, with first class honours, Martin has won many prestigious prizes including the Tiranti Prize at the FACE, the Signature Art Award, the Chelsea Arts Club show for ‘Amy’, the True Blue Show, the Salmagundi Open Show, New York, Green & Stone Summer Show, the Chelsea Arts Society Summer Show, RBA Rising Stars, the Royal Cambrian Academy Open, the Binny Mathews & Sons joint show, The Next Big Thing and has been published in the Kings House...

Plaster Polychrome Display Sculpture Bust Enchanting Woman
Located in BROOKLYN, NY
Possibly Beatrice, but likely a Grand Tour bust figure, painted plaster over wood. Marked 921 to verso. Barely a few losses to paint. Enchanting and remarkable bust of a young medieval woman. Grand Tour busts were popular souvenirs for wealthy Europeans, particularly British aristocrats, who traveled around Europe, especially Italy, from the 17th to the 19th centuries. These busts often depicted historical figures, mythological characters, or, as seen here, idealized figures in classical style. The provided search results and image descriptions suggest that this could be a 19th-century polychrome painted plaster cast bust...

Important Italian Glass Artist Ermanno Nason Female Murano Glass Female Bust
Located in St. Louis, MO
Master Italian Glass Artisan Ermanno Nason (1928-2013) created this smoked glass young female bust with ponytail sculpture in 1975. The only other example I found in my research was in his own gallery /museum, now temporary closed. Some minor surface scratches, mainly to bottom. Etched signature E. Nason '75 to base. Ermanno Nason was born in Murano in, from one of the oldest families of glassmakers on the island and appeared at his father Italo’s furnace at the age of ten. Ermanno left elementary school spending his time between the furnace and the school for Apprentices Masters “Abate Zanetti” (managed by Professor Vittorio Zecchin) and made his first experiences in more realities, including Pinzan & Cimarrosti where he was proclaimed Master at age of eighteen. In his youth, Ermanno also worked at the Mazzega I.V.R. collaborating on the great project of Egidio Costantini, which contemplated extraordinary artists of various types brought together: painters, sculptors and master glassmakers, to whom, in 1958, Jacques Cocteau gave the name of “Fucina degli Angeli”. This experience gave him the opportunity to start his personal search and the opportunity to meet with renowned painters and sculptors. Ermanno worked with all the greatest contemporary artists, from Marc Chagall to Oscar Kokoschka, from Pablo Picasso to Renato Guttuso, from Jacques Cocteau to Braque, from Jan Arp to Max Ernst, from Autun Motika to Alexander Calder. From 1953 to 1959 he was at I.V.R. Mazzega , assigned to carry out artists' designs for Egidio Costantini 's Fucina Degli Angeli , including ones by Georges Braque , Marc Chagall , Jean Cocteau , Pablo Picasso , and Gio Ponti. Around 1955 begins to collaborate with the Yugoslavian sculptor and painter Antun Motika, also the Kristal-Samobor glasworks in Maribor. Then he carried out designs by the painter Aldo Bergamini, which are exhibited in Warsaw in 1965. From 1958 collaborates with Fulvio Bianconi . During 1959-61 had his workshop in Murano Campo San Bernardo; continues for Bianconi, Costantini and Motika, as well as for Raoul Goldoni, among others. He has been partner in and designer at the Scarpa & Nason factory for utilitarian glass. From 1964 to 1971 he has been first master glassblower at Gino Cenedese . Makes works based on his own designs and in close collaboration with the leading designer Antonio Da Ros . In 1969 he carries out monumental glass sculptures...

Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture Grimilde Head by Vanessa Semaino
Located in Milan, IT
The “Surolù” art works - this is artistic identity chosen by Vanessa Semaino - arise from the artist 's need to represent women’s condition today, particularly in their emotional states that confer their unique identities. These precious ceramic sculptures, entirely handcrafted and decorated, represent female Moor’s heads. They were conceived as an expression of an introspective journey that relates Vanessa’s Sicilian origins and to her professional experience in the fashion stylistic field. The artist introduces, for the first time, the repeated use of sociological themes of current relevance through a visually immediate language, represented in her art works with a contemporary pop aesthetic. “Grimilde” is an artwork that addresses the dilemma of envy within the context of the seven deadly sins, through a representation that merges the wicked characters from fairy tales into a single figure. In it, there are recognizable references to Grimhilde, the witch from “Snow White”, the Queen of Hearts from “Alice in Wonderland,” and Cruella De Vil, all aimed at portraying envy in a world dominated by social media and the constant quest for approval and affirmation. The artwork is named after the evil queen from Snow White, and her figure is made evident by the turban that frames the face, emphasizing its features and wrinkled expression. The dress, with a black and white checkered pattern with red details, evokes that of the Queen of Hearts, as seen in the large red hearts decorating the crown, replacing the traditional acanthus leaves of typical Sicilian Moorish heads...

Shop Mid-Century Modern Busts, Neoclassical Busts and More

The presence of vintage and antique bust sculptures can add a necessary decorative layer to any interior. And just because a statue looks classical doesn't mean it has to be conventional.

A touch of whimsy, a dose of drama — a single bust can alter a room. And when placed in just the right spot, these statues can almost feel alive.

“They give humanity in a way that a more abstract sculpture can’t give,” says Los Angeles designer Timothy Corrigan, who loves pieces that beg to be touched. For a welcoming entry hall project in California, Corrigan selected an antique Persian rug and a bust that invites you to touch it. A collection of sculptures in wood, marble and brass complement the star of the show.

For Consort cofounder and creative director Mat Sanders, a bust doesn’t have to be pretty. “I most enjoy busts that are a little busted,” Sanders jokes — but choose something with a soul you can live with, as “sculpture representative of the human form carries with it an energy you will add to the space.”

The antique and vintage bust sculptures for sale on 1stDibs include Art Deco busts, mid-century modern busts and more.
