English Antique Marble Bust “Lady Layard” by John Warrington Wood ca. 1870
English Antique Marble Bust “Lady Layard” by John Warrington Wood ca. 1870

English Antique Marble Bust “Lady Layard” by John Warrington Wood ca. 1870

Located in Shippensburg, PA

JOHN WARRINGTON WOOD British, 1839-1886 Bust of a Woman, almost certainly depicting Lady Layard (1870) Carrara marble signed to the reverse "WARRINGTON WOOD SCULPT ROMA 1870" Item # 405UGP17Q A very finely carved marble bust that almost certainly depicts Lady Layard (British, 1843-1912) at 27 years of age. While the bust is not titled, John Warrington Wood had a relationship with the family, first sculpting Lady Mary Enid Evelyn Layard's husband and cousin Henry Austin Layard the year before in London in 1869. Wood exhibited that bust at the Royal Academy in 1870 and the same year Lady Layard would have sat down with him in Rome for the completion of this bust. Interestingly, Henry Layard decided he did not like the bust that was completed of him and eventually re-commissioned Wood to complete the bust again 12 years later in 1881, that example held in the permanent collection of The National Gallery in London. The same year, John Warrington Wood executed a second bust of Lady Layard that is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum of Art (acc. no. OA.10557). It is interesting to view the painting completed by Vicente Palmaroli y González...

Abstract Marble Sculpture by Emile Gilioli
Abstract Marble Sculpture by Emile Gilioli

Abstract Marble Sculpture by Emile Gilioli

By Émile Gilioli

Located in Stamford, CT

This beautiful marble sculpture by Emile Gilioli is made of rose veined marble (white/pink). The sculpture is signed and dated on wooden base. "Emile Gilioli was born to a family on Italian shoemakers who had settled beside the Canal Saint-Martin. After the first World War, the family moved back towards Italy, settling in Nice. In 1932, Gilioli took courses at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs de Nice, notably with the future artist Marie Raymond. During the Second World War, Gilioli was mobilized in Grenoble where he passed the remainder of the conflict. He made the acquaintance of Andry Fracy, a conservationist at the Grenoble Musee des baux-arts and led him to discover cubism. After the war, Gilioli settled in Saint-Martin-de-La-Cluze near Grenoble, where he sculpted in his workshop. His art was associated in a certain way with the deeds of the French Renaissance. He became friendly with Thomas Gleb...

Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe
Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe

Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe

Located in Shippensburg, PA

An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work. ARTIST Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia. “Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann
“Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann

“Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann

By Charles Korschann

Located in Shippensburg, PA

A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina. Charles Korschann Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français. His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments. Artist Listings...
