Cast in England in the 1900s using reconstituted stone, this charming pig and four piglets statue has developed a lovely weathered patina from exposure to the elements. Reconstituted stone is organic stone that has been crushed into small bits (if you look closely, you can still see pebble inclusions within the casting). These fragments are then combined with cement and sometimes coloring pigments are added to the mix. The resulting aggregate is poured into a mold where it is left to harden. 'Alpine' is a unique glass vase from the Molten Landscapes Collection by the British artist Bethany Wood. An equal passion for painting physically inspires how she controls and manipulates her glass. Recreating the fleeting nature of brush strokes, Wood’s molten colors traverse across the surface of her glass canvases blending in a myriad of hues. Unlike their flat painterly counterparts, these combine and merge, forming spontaneous watery and lava like abstract relief flourishes. Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources, Wood’s influences are taken directly from the world around us, elements of the inner-city sit alongside expansive landscapes. Reoccurring themes are Graffiti & Urban Culture, exploration & travel. In the artist's own words; "As a multidisciplinary artist, I have begun to merge my two artistic passions, painting and Glassmaking. I like to express myself with the fluidity of the material. Possessing an innate comprehension of engineering and design enables him to explore his passion for challenge and experimentation. Steve began teaching himself to sculpt in 1994. With the progression of his sculpting an ambition emerged to personally shape each piece of his work from concept to completion. He had entrusted the casting of his earlier bronzes to the established foundries. But the delays in delivering his work became frustrating and he was disillusioned by the changes that resulted from not handling the finishing stages himself. In 2002 Steve moved to Yorkshire, in the north of England, and began converting the vast workshop next to his house into the current 9 room studio & foundry. It was here he started to experiment in order to gain an understanding of the entire process that is traditionally a closely guarded secret handed down between foundry men. The challenges included mastering mould making skills and the lost wax impression of the moulds from which a one off ceramic mould is made ready for the bronze pouring. Expanding his expertise with chasing the bronze, his ability to hand work the malleable surface and with the patina (colours). These stages are normally undertaken by a succession of different people, each skilled in their particular phase of the evolving sculpture. Involvement with a diversity of initiatives has taken Steve to India, Peru, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Australia and Ethiopia, sculpting people and animals. Steve has regularly exhibited with Hickmet Fine Arts at the internationally acclaimed LAPADA Fine Art and Antiques Fairs ( the highly prestigious UK Antiques Federation) and twice with The Wildlife Arts Society at the Westminster Gallery where in 1998 he won the award for best 3 dimensional piece. He has exhibited twice at the Royal Academy in London. Projects include developing designs for two statues...

A very finely carved marble bust of William Ewart Gladstone dated 1868 and signed W.Theed SC William Theed was born in Staffordshire, his father, William Theed the elder being a sculptor and a craftsman at Wedgwood, known for his major work, Hercules and the Thracian Horses for one frontage of the Buckingham Palace complex. The younger Theed studied at the Royal Academy Schools, then worked for the sculptor E. H. Baily. Five years on, in 1826, he went to Rome, where he was to stay a total of 22 years, during that time working in the studios of Thorwaldson and John Gibson. Returning to London in 1848, Theed enjoyed a good reputation, being a favoured sculptor of Queen Victoria, and was commissioned to produce many portrait statues, busts, and large monuments. He showed work in the 1851 Great Exhibition, and among other high points were a group for the Albert Memorial, and five standing figures on the Inland Revenue side of Somerset House, representing Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin. Theed's statues may be seen in St Paul's (Henry Hallam), Manchester (Monument to Chetham in the Cathedral, Gladstone and Thomas Bright for the Town Hall, and James Watt in Piccadilly Gardens), Huddersfield (Robert Peel), Winchester (David Williams monument in the Cathedral), and Prince Albert statues for Grimsby, and in Australia in Macquairie Street, Sydney.
