Place of Origin: British
Return of History, a Colourful Boat Glass Sculpture by Baldwin & Guggisberg
By Monica Guggisberg & Philip Baldwin
Located in London, GB
'The Return of History' is a unique artwork by the American and Swiss artists, Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg. Combining Scandinavian and Venetian glass making techniques, their sculptural boat centrepieces are made from smaller blown and cut glass components nestled (in sand) inside a metallic hull. ''We are migratory creatures; the history of our species is about journeys, departures, leaving and arriving, starting over. And none more so than ourselves. Our new work is both culturally and personally inclined. An autobiographical touch in civilizational reflection. Wherever man goes he builds, laying down cultural lines which gradually transform into relics and artefacts over time''s inevitable march. Urban landscapes and complex designs grow and expand, deteriorate and decay. And on again we move, taking the memories of our exploits with us to use in the next story.'' B&G Baldwin (1947, New York) and Guggisberg (1955, Bern) have been a collaborative team for over forty years. They share an instinctive appreciation for the subtle blending of art and design, functionality and abstract expression, combined with a love of material – especially glass. The list of museums and collections which have acquired their works is long and impressive. Individual showings, as well as participation in group shows, have given them opportunities to present their works at leading galleries and in major museums in Europe, Japan and the United States and their works rank among the best to be found in the international glass art scene. Working freelance, they have also designed successful products for international glass manufacturers since 1985. Their clients have included renowned firms like Rosenthal, Steuben, Corning and Venini. Over time their work has developed its own distinctive signature, based in Italian cold-working (battuto) combined with the Swedish overlay process for layering colours. They have been pioneers in adapting these techniques and in creating a distinct expression of their own. Colour, light, texture, pattern, and shape together reveal an undercurrent of meaning and value, adhering to the simplest of forms and clear lines. Over the years they have become more sculptural in focus, while seeking to imbue their work with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. They address eternal symbols of human culture and history, while embracing contemporary evolution in form and meaning. In recent years large installations and major exhibitions in public spaces, such as Canterbury Cathedral...

Leather Seal by Dimitri Omersa for Abercrombie & Fitch, circa 1970s
By Dimitri Omersa, Abercrombie & Fitch
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A wonderful collectors example of the 'Seal' leather animal by Dimitri Omersa for Abercrombie and Fitch, circa 1970s. This example is in beautiful lightly aged with light patina. Sturdy and structurally sound, this seal is ready to be used as a fun doorstop, a large paperweight, or use as a designer floor or tabletop sculpture / work of art or a friendly companion to an otherwise lonely house dog or cat. Omersa's designed leather animals for Omersa Leatherworks of England, Omersa & Company, Liberties of London and Abercrombie and Fitch. Excellent early production original of this design, ideal collectors example or for an interior design client. Omersa made his first leather animal, a pig, in 1927 and from there created a full suite of interesting and charismatic creatures. Each leather animal is of the highest quality, beautifully stained and waxed. This example is one of the earlier ones, which are rare and highly sought after by collectors therefore very few on the resale market. Incredible opportunity for a collector or design enthusiast to have an original production example in beautiful patinated condition and to keep and collect for years to come. As you can see in our photos, we have a large collection of Omersa leather animals...

Acanthe, a Unique Steel Blue Glass Art Work and Centrepiece by Paul Stopler
By Paul Stopler
Located in London, GB
Acanthe is a cast glass artwork in a beautiful steel blue by the British artist Paul Stopler. With a smooth exterior, the interior is stepped into sections with ridged protruding "shelves" of glass, which are all created in the wax model from which this is cast. Using a complex series of processes, Stopler’s primary fascination is with the craft of lathe-turning waxes to produce unique cast-glass vessels. Made using the lost-wax technique, each of the pieces investigates the dialogue between its outer and inner surfaces; deeply cut exteriors projecting their changing mass onto internal cores and cut interiors illuminating the vessel's exterior with graduating tones. Each vessel is ground and polished to a satin finish, facilitating a soft interior view of light, tone and colour, with the rims being polished to a reflective finish for contrast. A single translucent color is chosen for each form for its potential to transmit changing hues and light accents; the deeper the mass of glass, the more saturated the color. Having studied at the Royal College of Art and previously assisted many other artists including Bruno Romanelli, Max jacquard, Colin Reid and Ann Robinson...

Plaster Portrait Bust of Lord Nelson after Anne Seymour Damer, England, 1802
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This bust of Admiral Lord Nelson was probably produced by Bartholomew Papera after the 1798 marble bust by Anne Seymour Damer. The reverse is impressed, ‘Anna S. Damer Fecit’ and ‘Pub. As the Act Dir’. Incomplete paper label on the integral black base. English, circa 1802. The Hon. Anne Seymour Damer (1748-1828) was a sculptor and author who later inherited Strawberry Hill, Horace Walpole’s famed Gothic villa in Twickenham. A friend of Sir William and Lady Hamilton, she probably met Nelson in Naples in 1798, afterwards offering a bust of the Hero to the City of London. On his return to London in 1800, Nelson gave Damer a sitting during which he presented her with his uniform coat worn at the Battle of the Nile. Although Damer’s monumental bust in marble was only delivered to the City in 1803, artist authorised copies in plaster, probably by the plaster figure maker Bartholomew Papera (c.1749-1815), were already circulating. Damer presented Napoleon Bonaparte in person with an example in plaster on her visit to Paris in 1802, whilst another reached the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. The Wedgwood factory purchased a plaster copy of Damer’s bust from Papera in 1802 (for 12 shillings), possibly for an unrealised scheme to reproduce it in basalt pottery...
