Antique Staffordshire Pearlware Bocage Object Ca. 1820 depicting a seating deer on the greens.

English antique hand crafted hardwood bull nose moulding plane. Made by G. Berry of London with curved base for planing bull nose edges, the iron blade is removable for sharpening.

This is a rare and magnificent object fashioned from a rare coco de mer nut and Ostrich egg by Antony Redmile. The box is secured to a wooden base with a silvered stand, holding both sides of the coconut. The coconut is a rich dark chocolate brown and appears to be warmly polished. The top of the box is silvered and adorned with beautiful malachite specimens. 2 small cast resin boar's teeth set with malachite are present on either side of the box, much like handles. Decorative silvered fittings hold ostrich eggs that serve as the lids to the box. Finally, a silvered fitting holds an oval malachite finial...

An interesting mid-19th century ecclesiastical 6-inch encaustic clay tile by Minton & Co. (stamped). Dating to circa 1850, this antique encaustic tile is an excellent example of 19th century Minton works. It has moderate surface wear, and the reverse is in very clean condition clearly bearing the Minton name and marked ‘29’. The design itself is of ecclesiastical theme, displaying a Christogram (also known as a Chi-Rho or Chrismon symbol). This is one of the earliest symbols of the Christian faith, used as far back as 4th century Ancient Rome by Emperor Constantine the Great who used the mark on shields as part of military symbolism. The symbol is a monogram of the Greek letters ‘Chi (X)’ and ‘Rho (P)’ which together form the first two letters of ‘Christ’ in Greek. From the 1700s through the early 1800s, European aristocrats developed a fascination with ancient Egyptian culture and design that culminated in a full Egyptian Revival. Prominent figures such as Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned rooms decorated with Egyptian motifs. This cultural moment reflects a fascination with a sophisticated civilization of great artists and pharaohs. The Regency era possessed very little knowledge of the Great Pyramids or hieroglyphics, a quality that lent Egyptian art interpretation a compelling air of mystique. This English Regency period gilt carving depicts a popular figure of borrowed Egyptian motif: the Sphinx. Recognized among educated circles as a symbol of brilliance in the ancient past, the Sphinx was well-known as a mythological creature who destroys those who failed to answer her riddle. Such a piece as this, excellent in detail and craftsmanship, may have once graced the mantle of a gentleman’s study or been exchanged as a gift between British scholars. The beautiful gold surface has been achieved by an artful combination of gilt and gesso; the art enthusiast will appreciate the intricate texture realized in the carving’s hair and tail as well as the delicate detailing of the saddle. Borrowing from the Egyptians, the Greeks had their own interpretation of the Sphinx. Greek mythology chronicled the Sphinx as being the daughter of Orthous and Chimera or Laius and attributed the riddles, which she proposed, as having been taught to her by the Muses. Crowned with a Grecian diadem and having a refined expression, she evokes an ancient yet reserved intellect. For the modern-day enthusiast of classical Greek art...
