Antique Boch Belgium Delft Vase converted in its early days into a Clock . An unique striking and decorative antique Delft vase clock in the traditional blue and white palette, richly painted in the early Chinese Kangxi style. The decoration features elegant Chinese figures, birds, floral motifs, and numerous auspicious symbols, reflecting the strong influence of Chinese export porcelain on Dutch Delftware. The figural scene is particularly evocative of the celebrated Chinese drama Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiangji), written by Wang Shifu during the Yuan Dynasty. The lively composition, combined with the intricate ornamental details, creates a captivating display piece that exemplifies the artistic exchange between East and West. The vase is of attractive octagonal form and is surmounted by a matching cover crowned with a finely modelled Foo dog finial. Exquisitely crafted by renowned ceramist Ingrid Atterberg for Uppsala Ekeby, this black, white and grey chamotte vase with a distinctive handle and rough surface epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian modern design. Ingrid Atterberg (1920–2008) designed many classic pieces for Upsala-Ekeby between the 1940s and 1960s. One of her most well-known series is "Progresso," created in 1958. This collection consists of eight earthenware items, including vases and bowls, characterized by their textured surfaces and rustic appearance. Each piece is deeply stamped on the underside with "UE," "Sweden," "Abg," and the model number. The "Progresso" series was produced until 1959. The vase has the shape of a classical urn and a swelling shape with a unique hand-decorated finish, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind. A very rare early work featuring a dark chocolate brown glaze by master Mid-Century Modern ceramist/potter Glen Lukens whose work has become quite collectible and relatively scarce and difficult to find. The work is signed and dated (1924) by Lukens on the underside (we have only seen one other piece dated this early and that piece is in the Forrest Merrill Collection). Lukens was the founder of the University of Southern California (USC) Architectural School’s Ceramics Department where he helped establish and promote clay pottery as a universally acceptable art form. The current popularity of Studio Pottery and ceramics is widely accepted to have started with Lukens who is oft credited with being one of the first artists to raise the stature of Mid-Century Modern Studio Pottery within the art world. Lukens is famed for his experiments with various glazes and glazing techniques. His influence and glazes can be clearly seen in the works of Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Beatrice Wood, James Lovera, etc. He was also known for combining bright, colorful textile glazes (using natural, organic materials and elements he found in the Mojave Desert, Palm Springs, and Death Valley to make what he referred to as "California Colors") with the rough and raw clay surfaces of his often rudimentary forms and vessels. Lukens currently has an award in his name (Glen Lukens Award) at the University of Southern California's School of fine Arts.
