Pair of Monumental Moroccan Fez Green Calligraphic Lidded Urns, Circa 1950
Pair of Monumental Moroccan Fez Green Calligraphic Lidded Urns, Circa 1950

Pair of Monumental Moroccan Fez Green Calligraphic Lidded Urns, Circa 1950

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

An exceptional pair of monumental Moroccan glazed ceramic urns, handcrafted in Fez circa 1950 and distinguished by their commanding scale, rich coloration and elaborate Arabic calligraphic decoration. Standing 33 inches high and measuring 16 inches in diameter each, these impressive floor-standing vessels have elegant baluster-shaped bodies surmounted by coordinating fitted lids. Their substantial proportions and strong vertical silhouettes give them an architectural presence rarely encountered in Moroccan decorative pottery. Each urn is covered in a deep, saturated green glaze contrasted against a warm earthen-brown ground. Flowing bands of Arabic calligraphy have been individually incised and carved into the ceramic surface, creating a richly textured design that changes in appearance as light moves across the vessels. The restrained two-color palette allows the intricacy of the lettering and the sculptural contours of the urns to remain the principal focus. The calligraphic decoration reflects the extraordinary importance of the written form within Islamic and Moorish art, where letters are appreciated not only for their meaning but also for their rhythm, balance and visual beauty. Here, the script functions as an ornamental composition, encircling the vessels with expressive movement. The precise wording of the calligraphy has not been independently translated. Handcrafted in Fez, one of Morocco’s most celebrated centers of ceramic production, the urns demonstrate the region’s long tradition of combining thrown earthenware, carved decoration and brilliant glazing. Their layered surfaces and monumental forms also evoke the calligraphic and arabesque ornament found throughout historic Hispano-Moresque architecture, including the palaces and courtyards of Granada and Andalusia. As a matched pair, the urns offer exceptional decorative versatility. They could flank a grand fireplace, Moorish archway, console table or entrance hall, or provide dramatic symmetry within a library, staircase landing or Mediterranean-style interior. They would be equally effective in a protected loggia or covered courtyard, where their deep green glaze would complement limestone, plaster, carved wood and antique textiles. Because they are vintage ceramics, sheltered decorative use is recommended. The pair is presented in good vintage condition with wear and surface variations consistent with age, previous use and traditional hand production. Natural differences in the glaze, carving and form should be appreciated as evidence of their individually handcrafted character. Any use with water should be preceded by professional testing or the addition of watertight liners. Sold as a set of two. Each urn measures 33 inches high by 16 inches in diameter. A rare and highly sculptural pair for collectors of Moroccan pottery, Islamic calligraphy, Moorish decorative arts and monumental architectural objects. Moroccan ceramic urns, Fez pottery, Arabic calligraphy ceramics, monumental lidded urns, green glazed pottery, Moorish decorative arts, Islamic calligraphic art, Moroccan floor vases...

Antique Blue and White Lidded Vases from Savona, Italy, Circa 1800
Antique Blue and White Lidded Vases from Savona, Italy, Circa 1800

Antique Blue and White Lidded Vases from Savona, Italy, Circa 1800

Located in Dallas, TX

During the 17th through 19th centuries, highly skilled artisans in Savona, Italy, produced beautiful tin-glazed earthenware known as maiolica (majolica). These blue and white lidded vases with serpentine handles, from circa 1800, are such an example. Early Savona offerings were painted cobalt blue on a white background, as seen on these vases. Because the scenes depicted on the main bodies are distinct, they are considered a near pair, although their dimensions do not vary. Both illustrations contain country houses surrounded by tall trees and fronted by vegetation emerging from rocky terrain. In each scene, people can be seen in front of the houses, with one having two citizens and the other having four. One of the renderings is bordered by roundels at the top and by a leafy vine at the bottom; the other vase does not have any surrounding motifs. The sides opposite the pastoral images are distinct as well: the one with the borders has curled vines surrounding the Savona Lighthouse (a production mark of studios from this region), while the other vase has the lighthouse above a pair of small foliate margents. Both vases have domed, removable lids with a conical finial emerging from a painted sunburst. Curled leaves have been painted along the circumference above a solid blue ring. The two curvaceous handles are each comprised of a pair of snakes bound with a ribbon. Our blue and white lidded Savona vases...

19th Century French "Porcelaine de Paris" Jardinière with Painted Pastoral Scene
19th Century French "Porcelaine de Paris" Jardinière with Painted Pastoral Scene

19th Century French "Porcelaine de Paris" Jardinière with Painted Pastoral Scene

By Porcelaine de Paris

Located in Dallas, TX

This elegant antique French jardinière, crafted in the Porcelaine de Paris tradition and dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890, reflects the decorative sophistication and painterly artistry for which Paris workshops were renowned. Oval in form and raised on four sculptural feet, the vessel is richly hand painted with a continuous pastoral landscape depicting a shepherd guiding his flock through rolling countryside, accented by trees, distant architecture, and softly shaded skies rendered in delicate, nuanced tones. The interior is finished in a clean white glazed surface, ideal for use as a planter or decorative cachepot. The exterior is further enhanced with fine gilt banding along the rim and rests on ornate feet highlighted with black enamel, gilt scrollwork, and shell motifs, all characteristic of Paris decorative production of the period. The painted decoration retains excellent color and detail, while the gilding shows gentle, honest wear consistent with age. This antique jardinière is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and remains a highly decorative and visually engaging example of late 19th century French craftsmanship. Perfect as a centerpiece on a console, commode, or dining table, this Porcelaine de Paris jardinière...
