An absolutely spectacular collection of "Lily" pattern sterling silver flatware mostly by Whiting an assembled set from an estate collection which was started in the 1970's. The pattern was introduced in 1902 and features a stunning high-relief handle with stalks of blossoming lily flowers across the surface. Please be aware this set is of mixed age, some antique 1902 pat pieces, some contemporary - view individual item marks below. A fantastic, freeform, large, heavy plate/ charger by American master potter Peter Voulkos who is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. Very unique and scarce work with rare use of color. Very hard to come by. One of our personal favorites along with the Chawan tea bowl. Signed on base and dated (1961) by Voulkos. This was made during one of his most magical and experimental phases. From of Private Collection, New York. Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramist of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards. Each glass is signed Georges Briard, visible on some, gone on other overtime. History of Georges Briard: Jakub Brojdo was born in the Ukraine and raised in Poland. He changed his name to Jascha (Yascha) Brojdo when he moved to Chicago in 1937 to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned his MFA. After serving in the U.S. Army throughout World War II he moved to New York and began painting metal serving trays signing them Brodjo. (quite a nice find for a collector). He was hired by his friend Max Wille, to create designs for the M. Wille Company, who came up with the name Georges Briard to mark commercial pieces. Brodjo was also a painter and would use his real name on his art pieces. As Georges Briard, Brodjo became an American award-winning designer, his designs stocked at high end department stores, such as Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. Bakelite was the major form of “art plastic” from the 1930s through to the 1950s. It was patented by Belgian born Leo Hendrik Baekeland in New York, in 1907, and was the first truly synthetic and thermosetting plastic. Thermosetting meant that it could not be melted or changed by heating once formed. It was marketed as the worlds first synthetic plasitc. This is a very rare set of vintage art deco bakelite with dual tones perfect for a collector or lover of vintage flatware. Great to Good condition with minimal to no damage, needs some light polishing. Light ware due to time and use, but there are no broken or loose parts. No burns or marks just light dirt over time.
