London, England C. 1884 a Boyd's Patent Campaign Cooker Food Warmer, also known as The Universal Heater. This unit is larger than others, having four openings for warmers. It has a removable top with a scalloped edge, is silverplate and has interlocking monogram engraved on the top (the initials are LW/WL with a crown symbol). The stand bottom is marked, "BOYD'S PATENT" and has six turned wooden bun feet. The underside also has a plaque reading "THE HOUSEHOLD SUPPLY AND ATMOSPHERIC CHURN COMP'Y LTD, 119 NEW BOND ST, W". While missing the original spirit burners, modern day sternos would work well.
This is a very attractive and decorative item that could be used for a variety of purposes including food warming and display, a unique charcuterie board, for floral display and so on.

Elkington & Co are one of the most important names in English Silver and Silver Plate. Elkington started in Birmingham in 1836, and experimented with innovative gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. By 1840 production was already underway with silver electroplated wares. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success. Elkington held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. The Elkington & Co. name is still in use today as manufacturers under the auspices of British Silverware Ltd.
Trust Houses, the client for whom this mug was made, was part of a group that operated a chain of hotels and inns in the UK, with a focus on offering consistent quality and hospitality standards. This collaboration suggests that the mug was likely produced for use in one of these establishments, possibly as part of a larger set for dining or bar service.
The year 1962 places it in a post-WWII period, during which Elkington & Co. was known to produce items both for commercial and private use. Silver-plated items from Elkington with clear markings, especially those produced for companies like Trust Houses, are quite collectible.

A cutler named Thomas Boulsover, who worked for a cutlers company in Sheffield, England, accidentally invented what we now call Sheffield silverplate during the 1700s. While working on a decorative knife for a customer — the metalworkers guild had been tasked with repairing its handle — Boulsover mistakenly overheated the silver and noticed that the knife’s layers of silver and copper melded together, creating an impressive bond. This new material felt like silver but was substantially cheaper. It was then used to produce a variety of serveware, candlesticks, buttons, tea sets and more. For families that couldn’t afford the sterling-silver tureens that were used to serve soup in the upper-class English homes at the time, this was good news. They could impress guests with housewares that looked like sterling silver but actually weren't.
