Vintage ceramic vessel or vase features pitcher shaped body with decorative handle. The lower half of the body is lightly faceted, resulting in octagonal outline when the vessel is viewed from above; the upper half has rounded form with lightly flared rim. The minimal handle is accented with tear or water drop shaped element on top. The vase is decorated with complex blue and white glaze with foaming effect; the free-flowing pattern of larger bubble elements adds tactile, textural quality to the unusual glaze. The vessel is signed by the artist on the bottom; same signature can be seen on the bowl in E. John Bullard Collection of Bates College Museum of Art. Provenance: the vessel was acquired at the arts, antiques, and Folk Art collector estate in Western New York state. Clara Katherine Nelson (1890–1984) was a renowned American cubist painter and ceramic artist. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and taught at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Nelson was invited by Charles Fergus Binns to teach painting and drawing at Alfred University at the School of Ceramics in 1920, replacing Marion Fosdick, who shifted to teaching modeling and pottery. Nelson worked with Binns and Fosdick to develop pioneering curriculum for functional ceramic education and started to work in pottery and ceramics herself; in 1927 they were joined by Charles Harder, who brought in the “New Bauhaus” aesthetic and studied with Lásló Moholoy-Nagy in Chicago. Fosdick, Harder and Nelson created the Ceramic Art curriculum throughout the 1930s and oversaw its transformation into Industrial Ceramic Design (from 1939–1951), and on into a more Bauhaus-inspired Ceramic Design (1951–1965). Nelson's students included Jane and Gordon Martz, Glidden Parker, Herb Cohen...

We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze. In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

A striking pair of large Chinese glazed and painted pottery figures, Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644), circa 16th century, China. The impressive and realistically modeled figures each portrayed standing upright upon a sancai (three color) glazed pedestal of kang table form. The man is dressed in a short black surcoat over a long robe and pants, a smart cap upon his head. His face is warm and welcoming, with wide eyes and a slight smile on his lips. He holds his hands out in front of him, palms up, almost as if shrugging, though presumably originally holding an object or offering, now lost. The woman of slightly smaller stature, and dressed in a longer surcoat over a long robe and skirt. She wears a fitted cap upon her head. Her hands also held out in front, grasping long lost objects. Her face is slightly more severe, with a somewhat pinched look, and slight frown upon her lips. The size of these figures is remarkable, as is the realism and attention to detail, almost as if they were modeled after real people, as opposed to the more common and generic Ming Dynasty pottery...

Sculptural majolica lamps feature complex hand-sculpted reticulated bodies with 4 vertical segments; two narrower segments are composed around the central medallions of Sun God face, surrounded by abstract geometric pattern, and two wider segments consist of complex lattice work, influenced by Art Deco and Renaissance styles. Minimal elongated shape of the lamps balances highly textured reticulated designs, and the choice of white glaze adds a Modernist touch to the pieces. The soft Blanc de Chine color scheme is reminiscent of Nancy Meyers aesthetic. The lamps are mounted on brass bases with brass fixtures; they are signed by the artist on the inner rims of the ceramic bodies. The ceramic parts were acquired from the importing warehouse that operated in 1940s-1970s; they were stored unused, as old new stock, for at least 50 years, before finally being wired. It is quire rare to find a pair of lamps by an important Italian ceramic artist of early 20th century; we are excited to be able to offer another pair of white majolica lamps by Alfredo Santarelli in different shape in a separate listing. The lamps are fully operational with the new brass single turn knob sockets, wired for US 110v, standard polarized plugs. The ceramics are in good vintage condition with some age-appropriate signs of storage wear on the glaze that are not detracting from the overall quality of the pieces, and are shown in the pictures. The issues can be corrected professionally at discretion of the customer; we chose to not restore the ceramic parts to preserve the original condition and the vintage charm of the lamps. Alfredo Santarelli (1874-1957) was born in Gualdo Tadino, Italy; he is considered one of the most important Italian ceramic artists of the 20th century. His talent in drawing and his mastery in the tin glazing technique (lusterware) won him a large number of golden medals in International and Italian ceramic exhibitions. His excellent portraits and classic subjects are prized collectors’ items, but he also interpreted Islamic, Liberty and Art Deco designs and shapes with great originality. In the second half of the 20’s his art evolved in line with the contemporary trends. Santarelli started his career in the pottery studio of Paolo Rubboli...

French Pottery Majolica Rabbit Pate Tureen circa 1950.

Striking serving set of tureen with lid and underplate features ceramic or porcelain body with faux bamboo decor, forming a strong geometric trim in Chinese Chippendale style. Warm, buttery yellow colors of the bamboo trellises with mocha brown accents are meticulously hand-painted with great detail; the faux bamboo trellis, done in relief, stands out on white background. The lid has an opening for the serving utensils. The tureen and the underplate are marked with "Made in Italy" on the bottoms; the pieces are missing the distributor stickers. The Chinese Chippendale style was popular in Italy in 1960s, and fine examples of Italian designs were produced by multiple companies, including the luxury furniture company Vivai Del Sud, which made both furniture and decor items, such as lamps, in this style. We're attributing the set to Mottahedeh, who sourced high quality Italian majolica in similar styles; the pieces will be simply marked ITALY or "Made in Italy" and Mottahedeh will add their paper stickers. As the pieces are quite old, the stickers often get lost or destroyed. The tureen with its classic shape, detailed decor, and historically inspired design will blend quite well with many china and serverware patterns, both in traditional and more modern styles. Overall, the piece is surprizingly reminiscent of the beautiful Vannerie Cottage pattern by Alberto Pinto, inspired by Jean-Michel Frank’s Bauhaus rattan...
