1970s Italian Vintage Space Age Dry Bars
Metal
Vintage Space Age furniture captured post–World War II optimism with swooping shapes, bowed lines and experimentation with new materials including plastic and fiberglass.
From the launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957 to the landing of Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969, the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States propelled advancements in technology that transformed culture. Space Age design encompassed fashion, architecture, cars, furniture and objects for the home, bringing wonder and hope for the future into everyday life.
Coinciding with Pop art, Space Age style featured bold colors and forms. Eero Aarnio’s Ball chair, which debuted in 1966, used molded fiberglass for a capsule-like space while Verner Panton’s 1959 Panton chair was a single piece of molded plastic for a gravity-defying S shape. Red versions of Olivier Mourgue’s 1964 Djinn chair were futuristic enough to appear on the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Today, Joe Colombo is revered as a master of modern Italian design thanks to the provocative modular furniture pieces he created, such as the Tube chair and the Elda armchair, both of which embody the future-forward spirit of the Space Age.
The Space Age spirit extended to home building too. The futuristic Case Study Houses, which were designed by the likes of Pierre Koenig, Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Whitney R. Smith, are considered a high point of modernism and the Southern California lifestyle.
Sometimes the nods to space exploration were more literal, like moon and star motifs or the 1965 Eclisse lamp by Vico Magistretti that saw the mid-century Italian designer integrating a movable inner shade to “eclipse” the light source. Alongside the pioneering moon missions, JVC manufactured the Videosphere portable television reminiscent of the Apollo 11 space helmets.
Although the style faded in the 1970s — with the 1975 joining of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts signaling a new era of cooperation and the global oil crisis impacting the availability of plastics — the era’s innovations influenced designers into the 21st century such as Zaha Hadid and Djivan Schapira.

Raymond Loewy Inspired Green Chapter One Dry Bar Buffet by Broyhill Premier
Located in Chattanooga, TN
The Chapter One Server (model 6316-05) is a fabled unicorn. Broyhill's Chapter One line has acquired a cult following over the last decade. This Server / Dry bar is the first (and most likely last) one we've had our hands on in 15 years, and it's not for lack of hunting. Trust us when we say, you won't find another one anywhere, and if you do, it won't be fully restored like this show pony. Broyhill’s Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy originals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they’re just more fun and approachable. Maybe it’s the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they’re one of our favorite collections of all time. The restoration team pulled no punches on this Chapter One Green Server / Dry-Bar, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of painted wood was professionally sanded primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and green molded plastic door / drawer fronts were finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. It’s tough to see this one go, but we know it will be loved. Broyhill’s Chapter one collection borrowed from the plastic mold injection designs made famous by legendary designer Raymond Loewy. Like Loewy, this Chapter One Green Server employs the futuristic use of color and materials in a way that had not been seen before. The bright green plastic captures the playful spirit of the 1970s. The cabinet is supported by four steel casters that roll with ease. Three hinged doors with towel racks and wood bottle holders, conceal adjustable shelves. Of course this gem is finished on the back with a giant inset green panel framed in the curved white wood. This colorful, curvaceous case-good could have blended in nicely on the set of 2001 A Space Odyssey. The space-age look has never been more desirable, which may help explain the recent scarcity of all things Chapter One. Chapter One green credenza original catalog description: Broyhill’s Chapter One is the beginning of a new era in furniture design and technology. It emphasizes the use of new materials, new shapes and new finish concepts. Chapter One uses plastic for design as well as durability. The fronts are of “Cycolac” polymer, the tops are of newly developed Pionite high gloss laminate, pedestal tulip bases of spun steel. Curved wood areas of select tupelo veneers with cabinet hardwoods are the result of advanced woodworking technology. The bright lacquer finish was especially blended for Chapter One. The House & Garden colors are impregnated into the plastic so that the brilliant colors are completely through the Cycolac. All this plus the outstanding Premier features that are standard in Chapter One, make it one of the most outstanding furniture values...
