Beautiful early 20th century Art Nouveau buffet/ cabinet out of Austria made by the renowed company of Viennesse cabinetmaker Heinrich Bäck around 1910. The lower part provides two doors, both adorned by a fantastic looking inlayed patterns as well as a two drawers. A slightly pink/ orange shining marple plate on top and the still original facet cut mirror plate (showing aging spots/ slight scratches) in the back gives this matchless 20th century buffet a matchless appearance. The attached upper part with two facet cut glass panelled doors floats on four beautiful carved solid wooden columns, all additionally edged by polished brass applications. Two smaller compartments - veneered in fine birds eye maple - appear behind these lovely worked doors that can be wide opened. Another great highlight is the delicate silver coated floral design on the glass panels. This exceptional pair of Italian neoclassical 18th century dressers in wood richly inlaid on the front, sides and 4 truncated pyramid legs are top-quality example of Italian 18th century cabinetmaking. The pair of commodes are originals from the second part of the 18th century (1780).
The front of the pair of commodes is divided into three levels of drawers, two thinner ones at the top and bottom and a thicker central one. This arrangement makes the front of the pair of drawers even more elegant.
On the front of the central drawer stands a large oval with two mirror-image neoclassical figures represented. Rich and complex foliate motifs start from the oval and extend gracefully across the entire surface. Corresponding to the upper and lower drawers, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays depicting classical style garlands with ribbons, cameos and phytomorphic elements. On the side, inside geometric figures created through the combination of various wood essences there are other garlands and recurring elements in the inlays of the neoclassical period.
The pillars are also inlaid with floral and leaf decorations. The four truncated pyramid legs are also inlaid.
These eighteenth-century Italian chests of drawers were exhibited at the Triennale Museum in Milan on the occasion of the exhibition "Il Salone, la città", which took place in conjunction with the "Salone del Mobile" in Milan. We have all the documentation attesting to this museum exhibition.
The dressers are entirely inlaid with the use of different wood essences. The inlaid surfaces have also been pyrographed and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows you to create greater definition of the decorations, giving three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the drawings. With a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini di Parabiago, who brought the inlay technique applied to neoclassical furniture to the highest levels.
The marble top is contemporary. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks, also original, are in gilded bronze.

Work from the end of the 19th century. The bronzes are marked on the back ZJ, attesting to the prestigious origin of this piece of furniture.
Some details on this subject:
The "ZJ" mark has long been controversial among experts on 19th century Parisian furniture, some attributing these pieces of furniture to the Zwiener house, others claiming that they are pieces of furniture from the Jansen house, the latter having bought the Parisian workshops of the famous Zwiener brothers in 1895.
We can cite for example Christopher Payne, the leading expert on the subject who writes in his book "Paris la quintessence du meuble au XIXème siècle" in the chapter on "Jansen Jean-Henri (1854-1929)" on page 396: "The initials "ZJ" affixed to the back of the bronzes have long been attributed to Jansen, cited as "Zwiener Jansen". However, we believe that these initials also refer to the furniture made in Berlin by Julius Zwierner and not necessarily to those of Jansen. To complicate things, Jansen bought the "ZJ" master models. The latter being mainly of the type and style of those originally modelled by Léon Messagé, who was an independent sculptor until the end of 1890."
