Born in France in the mid-19th century, hand-crafted of rich solid fruitwood with warm wood tones, subtle grain detail, and nicely aged mellow patina over the whole. Finished in French Empire taste, having a molded cornice, concealed ogee frieze drawer with dovetail joinery, over fall front panel, opening to reveal original fitted interior gallery, with inset gilt tooled leather writing surface, large open shelf cubby, six drawers of various size, above double-door cabinet with brass shield escutcheon that opens to provide generous storage space, and an additional lower drawer for valuables hidden in the base molding, rising on square feet.

History/Back Story:
Louis Philippe furniture had the same types and forms as the earlier French Restoration style, but with less decoration; comfort was the primary consideration.
During the turbulent French Revolution and following Napoleon rule, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) remained in exile for 21 years until the Bourbon Restoration, when he became the King of the French from 1830 to 1848.
For the first time, the developing upper class–not the monarchy–influenced the progression of this style’s characteristics.

Constructed in ebony, and dressed with two-color gold ormolu mounts, made with exceptional refinement, Florentine Pietra Dura panels (with colors of blue, red, orange and green), pewter inlay work and Portor marble tops. Each cabinet rising from oblate bun feet below the incurved, pewter line-inlaid lower tiers; the supporting circular columns have ormolu capitols engraved with trellis patterns; the friezes house spring released lockable mahogany lined drawers, each of which are faced with pairs of hardstone plaques, and extensive ormolu foliates. One cabinet has flanking ormolu female caryatids atop fluted columns, the other with torsade columns atop a fluted column; the fall-fronts have centrally sited hardstone plaques depicting bowls of fruit within an ormolu framework, and with ormolu ribband-tied foliates to the sides; the lockable fall-fronts open to Revel writing surfaces and fitted interior, with the four small drawers set about the central lockable drawer; the sides have further pewter line inlays enclosing centrally sited ormolu foliates; the Portor marble platforms sit upon the upper friezes of stiff- leaf and Vitruvian scrolls. One cabinet bearing an old circular paper label ‘110/1825/No 1176’.

We are, therefore, delighted to be able to present this lovely Victorian satinwood and marquetry antique bureau de dame with ormolu mounts which was made around 1880. As you can see from the images supplied below and in the gallery, it is surmounted with a three quarter elegant brass galley.
A drop flat opens to show a fitted interior comprising three small drawers, a red leather gold tooled writing surface and a well.
The bureau is embellished with wonderful floral marquetry decoration that is clearly the work of a master craftsman, as can be seen from the photograph below and those in the gallery.
This antique bureau de dame stands on sturdy, yet very elegant, cabriole legs which are decorated with beautiful ormolu mounts. Furthermore, the bureau is supplied complete with its original working lock and key.
