MEDIEVAL STYLE

The Middle Ages in Europe followed the end of the Roman Empire, and in this time of change, which preceded the Renaissance, furniture was simple and utilitarian, with most homes having only the necessities like chests and benches. Much of medieval furniture, which was often made in oak or walnut, was built for the elite, particularly the emerging merchant class who owned multiple homes.

Life for many in the medieval era was unstable, and furniture was designed to be functional and portable. Peasants worked the fields for affluent landowners and didn’t have access to literature in the way that nobles and people of the church did (women less so than men). The furniture in their modest dwellings was typically limited to cookware and a handful of stools. Foldable chairs, while uncommon in homes of the early Middle Ages and emblematic of wealth, like all other furnishings of the time, allowed for easy transportation of a household. Trestle tables with detachable legs and collapsible beds were designed to be simply moved from place to place.

Medieval blanket chests were among the most important furniture objects and could further serve as tables or even beds. Some ancient traditions were carried forward to build this sturdy furniture, such as turnery. Although the furniture was minimally designed, embellishments like carvings added elegance to the heavy wood pieces. These details sometimes reflected trends in religious art like rose windows.

By the later Middle Ages, storage pieces like chests of drawers were often adorned with high relief carvings, such as geometric and floral motifs. By the 14th and 15th centuries, design had developed to include more involved pieces like cupboards and desks, while benches frequently doubled as chests with hinged seats. Beds also changed in this era from basic boards to four-post designs with large drapes to keep the sleeper warm. These beds and other medieval bedroom furniture were significant status symbols, passed down through families and used as places to conduct business and receive visitors.

Surviving examples of medieval furniture are very rare, yet its distinctive aesthetics influenced later styles like William and Mary and Arts and Crafts.

Antique Gothic Rare Illuminated Antiphonal Leaves on Vellum, Italy 14th-15th C.
Antique Gothic Rare Illuminated Antiphonal Leaves on Vellum, Italy 14th-15th C.

Antique Gothic Rare Illuminated Antiphonal Leaves on Vellum, Italy 14th-15th C.

Located in Doha, QA

A refined and visually compelling collection of two large-format illuminated from both sides manuscript leaves on vellum, originating from Italian choir books of the late 14th to early 15th century. These leaves, once part of monumental liturgical codices used for communal singing, exemplify the artistry and devotional culture of the medieval church. Each leaf is executed in bold Gothic script with square Gregorian notation on red staves, designed for legibility at a distance. The collection includes examples from a Psalter and Antiphonal, encompassing both textual and musical elements of the liturgy. The group is distinguished by its range of illumination, from finely ornamented initials in red and blue with delicate penwork flourishing, to a more elaborate historiated composition depicting the Adoration of the Magi, rendered in vivid pigments with gold accents and intricate vine borders. This figurative leaf reflects a higher level of artistic sophistication and devotional narrative, typical of important ecclesiastical commissions. Texts include passages from the Psalms (notably Psalm 26, “Dominus illuminatio mea”) and chants associated with major liturgical moments such as Epiphany and the Office of the Dead. The musical leaves preserve the rhythmic structure of Gregorian chant, with neumatic notation carefully aligned to the text. Executed on fine animal (sheep) skin (vellum), the leaves display the natural undulation and patina characteristic of medieval parchment...

Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights
Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights

Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights

Located in Lisse, NL

Stunning firescreen with a famous earth angle, two famous saint paintings and more. With meaningful 'religious art' from centuries-past being one of our specialities we were amazed, not only to find this rare and marvelous fire screen, but also because of its excellent condition. But then again, we think we see that more often, because true beauty, quality and meaningful antiques radiate something that was already there when it was created. This 'something' commands respect and this is why most people take very good care of very special pieces. Since much of what we know now about Christianity and about monastic life in its various 'forms' was given shape since the life of Christ, but possibly mostly so in Gothic / Medieval times, much of this is expressed in European Gothic Art of the past circa 8 centuries. This rare and beautiful fire screen from the early 1800s, which can also be used as a small room divider or a unique work of (decorative) art, is one of those unique Gothic antiques. The hand-carved knight sculptures are 'fun' and meaningful at the same time, because one of them looks a little desperate and the other looks more at piece and in prayer. The hand-carved winged angel in the middle/ on top seems to be overlooking this 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. What makes this antique really stand out and what also makes it complete are the three hand-painted panels inside this screen. Each of the figures portrayed here have dedicated their lifes to doing good, giving love and hope and thus healing people. In the centre is a glorious painting (in medieval style) of Earth Angel St. Raphael and the boy Tobias. The lady Saint on the right, we feel, is Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) and the Saint on the left, we feel, is either Francis de Sales...

Stunning Handcrafted Late 1800s Gothic Casket with Peacock & Gargoyle Sculptures

Stunning Handcrafted Late 1800s Gothic Casket with Peacock & Gargoyle Sculptures

Located in Lisse, NL

Beautiful and rare Gothic Revival treasure box with bronze handle. If you are a collector of antique boxes and/or if you are looking for an extraordinary jewelry box to grace your credenza or side table then this unique and top quality made specimen in the Gothic style could be perfect. Gothic Revival boxes are very hard to find and we have never seen one with such prodigious carvings on all sides. The unique and cat-like dragon gargoyles (with fangs) that look like they are carrying this casket, are just some of the stunningly carved and detailed sculptures that make this antique rarity even more artistic and impressive. Another great feature are the peacock sculptures. In Christianity the peacock is the symbol of purity. Christians believe that once someone has passed their soul rises and goes to heaven. This is why in earlier times Christians would spread the feathers of a peacock over the deceased since it symbolized a pure soul that was immune to corruption. The peacock also represents immortality, resurrection, and the spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ and the Christian church. Have you also noticed the top quality details on both ends of the bronze handle on top? The quality of that ornamental work is of the absolute highest standard also. There are many more incredibly beautiful, hand carved details and together they show that no expense was spared to create one of the most amazing Gothic caskets...

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550

Located in Dallas, TX

Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...
