"Lovers in the Park” by German/French Artist Ferdinand Heilbuth
By Ferdinand Heilbuth
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A Classic romantic movement oil painting on wood panel depicting two lovers. They are dressed in Renaissance almost theatrical garments and they sit intimately close to one another on a bench. The atmospheric background is set in the middle of a wooded park in the early evening hours before dusk. Their faces are almost in shadow as the brilliant orange/red sun sets behind them. The painting is signed F. Heilbuth on the right hand bottom corner of the canvas and is dated ’76 in reference to 1876. It is set in a gold painted wood frame. Biography Ferdinand Heilbuth, (1826-1889), was a German-born French painter. He was born in Hamburg in 1826, and died in Paris in 1889 having become a French citizen in 1876, the same year he painted this work. He is buried in Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. This genre painter whose talent has the characteristics of nobility, liveliness of color and accent in expression, exhibited many times at the Royal Academy in London. His works were also shown in the Grosvenor Gallery...

Louis Vidal (1831-1892), Roaring Lion, France
Located in PARIS, FR
Beautiful roaring lion in gold patinated bronze by the artist and sculptor Louis Vidal (1831-1892) of the Romantic period, France 19th century. Dimensions in cm ( H x L x l ) : 17 x 36 x 9 Secure shipping. Louis Vidal, Vidal the blind or Vidal-Navatel is a French sculptor born on December 6, 1831 in Nîmes and who passed on May 9th, 1892 in the 12th district of Paris. Born to an unknown father and Sophie Vidal-Navatel, he grew up in a family of artists, having for stepfather the painter Alexandre Colin who married his mother in second marriage and for half-brother Paul-Alfred Colin. He studied anatomy but became blind around 1853, which prevented him from pursuing this path. He studied with the animal sculptors Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre Louis Rouillard and became an animal sculptor himself by replacing sight with touch. This faculty enabled him to create portraits, he perceived the shape of faces by touching them and sculpted them in clay, and remains known as the author of a sculpture representing a roaring lion, as well as that of a bull in bronze, donated by the State to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes in 1867. Louis Vidal worked in particular with Alfred Barye, son of his master Antoine-Louis Barye. He became a professor of modeling in 1888 at the École Braille in Paris. A portrait of the artist taken by the photographer Étienne Carjat...

Antique English Painting “Lake Nemi, Italy” '1865' by John Wilson Carmichael
By Carmichael
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The present work is an interesting scene for a number of reasons, including importantly its time of execution in 1865. It was during a period of his retirement to Scarsborough following time spent in Italy, sketching the major lakes and landscapes in the northern part of the country. Likely executed in his studio using the preparatory sketches made of the area during these travels, the scene captures an idyllic view of Lake Nemi during sunset. It is rich in fall colors as light cascades through the haze of clouds and strikes the turning leaves of the trees, casting long shadows along the meadow grasses. The blue waters of Lake Nemi are cool and reflect the landscape bordering the shore. The focal point of the scene is a family of three that is taking the day to hike the local countryside, breaking along a rock to enjoy the lovely views. The work is signed and dated 1865 in the lower right corner and the original frame retains a label on it from John Hay & Son, an art dealer, framer and gilder in John Wilson Carmichael...
