These elegant enamel plaques was painted in Limoges, a town in the south-west of France. While Limoges was highly regarded for its painted enamel wares in the 15th Century, in the following periods there was a decline in production. In the mid-19th Century, however, items like this pair began to be created, reviving the techniques of enamel painting that were perfected in the medieval period. Contemporary New York artist Peter Buchman's "Exit Strategy" is made of laser cut plexiglass, acrylic medium and enamel on wood. To explain that Buchman's word paintings are 'A Figure of Speech' is underestimating the level of soulfulness at which these works reside. They are markings directly from the artist’s hand yet are indications of many people before him. These are words from familiar phrases, music albums, his funny brand of irony and the human form itself. As far as "Exit Strategy" goes, Peter Buchman tends to dream a lot when he sleeps. When it's a really deep sleep, he is usually in an espionage kind of caper. Maybe James Bond meets film noir. He doesn't know why, but he's woken himself up running in place, sweating, and truly believing that he's killed someone. It is such a relief to sit up in bed and find that nothing's really happened, and all is well in his little corner of the world. With that said, there's a twisted, funny side to all of this, which leads him to something that everyone is familiar with: getting out of a sticky situation and how to address it. Facing it head-on and with a sense of humor is his default. Signed and dated en verso. This is a commissioned piece and will ship directly from the artist's studio.
