The print was published in Germany around the mid-nineteenth century. At the centre of the composition is a detailed view of the Cathedral of Lima, one of the most important landmarks of the former Viceroyalty of Peru. Surrounding this principal image are ten smaller engraved vignettes illustrating the landscapes, wildlife, architecture and people of Peru, Bolivia and Chile.
