Embroidery thread on canvas Image size: 27 cm H x 17 cm W Frame size: 40 cm H x 30 cm W x 3 cm D Unique Blackwood frame with plexiglass ___ Maria Jose Franco Maldonado’s family was her art school by the hand of Georgia O`Keefe, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Artemisia Gentileschi, Matisse, Leonor Fini, Leonora Carrington, Louise Bourgeois, Maripaz Jaramillo, Judy Chicago, Basquiat, and so many others. She then formalized her studies in art direction and advertising in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2015, she showed her work for the very first time in three group exhibitions around New York at Shervin's Café Gallery, Brooklyn Fireproof Gallery, and Greenpoint Gallery. That same year her illustrations accompanied Pilar Gualco`s literary work in Buenos Aires at Fauna Estudio Taller. In 2017, she fell in love with embroidery. Slowly, she connected techniques and in the process dressed up a lot of weird humans. She showed her work in 2019 at Noches San Felipe and Open San Felipe with SGR and Bandy Bandy galleries in Bogotá, Colombia. Her series AFFAIR was shown at Noches del Millón, from Feria del Millón in Medellín, Colombia at the end of 2019. Measuring 56 H x 67 W, this large Dutch oil on canvas painting from the 1700s depicts a Southern landscape of a glen beneath a rocky cliff. The expansive valley stretches far into the distance, before terminating at a lake in front of a mountain. Numerous flocks of sheep can be seen throughout the basin, including a group high up on the towering cliff with green trees dotting the sand-colored rock. Most of the flocks in the distance are being tended to by shepherds, but interestingly, a group of four men has gathered in the foreground to engage in leisurely activities as their sheep, cows, goat, and dog await nearby. A few chateaus can be seen in the distance, but most of the architecture is in the style of a capriccio, in that they are dilapidated. The top of a stone obelisk is missing and there are some losses to the inscribed pedestal next to it that supports a lidded urn. Large pieces of broken rock are scattered about, with one slab being used as a seat/table for two shepherds playing cards. Several birds fly in the blue sky, with the setting sun giving the clouds hues of gray, orange, and pink. A large Nazca-Wari woven textile panel known as Llika or Awayo (shawl) from Ica Valley on the south coast of nowadays Peru. Professionally mounted and conversed on a linen-backed wood frame and presented in an acrylic shadow box. Shawls with this step design were identified as made from the period of 700 to 1100 AD during the transitional period when Nazca went under the expanded rule of the Wari empire. The textile was finely woven from a camelid fiber dyed with natural pigments. The work strikes the viewer immediately with its unexpected modernity. The simple, bold and repetitive geometry with the scintillating color blocks created a lyrical visual rhythm and could easily mistake it as an abstract art from the 20th century. The step design was one of the unusual abstract motifs used by the pre-Columbian weavers from Nazca, who created some of the most mysterious and soul-stirring work with a minimalism aesthetic that was rarely seen in any other ancient textile art. The panel with short fringes on the end used to be half of a sleeveless tunic (similar to poncho) in which two similar pieces were joined together. Professionally mounted and conversed on a linen-backed wood frame and presented in an acrylic shadow box. The textile was finely woven from a camelid fiber dyed with natural pigments. The work strikes the viewer immediately with its unexpected modernity. The tri-colored geometrical blocks created a zigzagged step design that is visually minimal but bold at the same time. Its repetition evokes a lyrical visual rhythm that is unparallel in the ancient textile art and could easily mistake it as an abstract art from the 20th century.
