Puya atra, the flower upon which this design is based, is a Bromeliad. It is an important food source for spectacled bears with extraordinary turquoise flowers, an incredibly rare flower colour. The flowers are pollinated by super-heroic little hummingbirds which can fly at speeds which, relative to body length, are greater than any other vertebrate, with wing-speeds of over 80 beats per second.
This design is part of The Beatrice Edit, a collaboration between biologist/designer Susy Paisley and her daughter Beatrice, who is a budding interior designer. and avowed minimalist. One day, in a conversation about their different tastes, it occurred to them to do an edit of Newton Paisley designs for people who, like Beatrice, think less is more in their interiors. A 'Sunflower' pattern wallpaper panel designed by William Morris in 1879 and printed by Arthur Sanderson & Sons circa 1960 in a brilliant red and olive colorway.
First designed in 1879, the William Morris ‘Sunflower’ wallpaper pattern has lasting appeal and has been printed for many generations of wallpaper enthusiasts. The sunflower as a design motif became extremely popular in the late 19th century in conjunction with the Arts & Crafts and Aesthetic Movements, which looked to nature for design inspiration. In 1940, Morris & Co. closed and their woodblocks and designs were acquired by Arthur Sanderson & Sons, who continues to print the wallpapers even today. This edition of the ‘Sunflower’ wallpaper was printed in the mid-20th century and features a vibrant red and olive colorway, a far cry from the natural palette of Morris’s original design.
Dimensions: 52 3/8 in. H x 21 1/4 in. W (133.2 cm H x 54.2 cm W)
Condition: Very good. Paper with slight warping. Framing prong overlaps wallpaper in two areas (see image). Not examined out of frame.

And today, paper is challenging paint’s long dominance. “In the late 1990s and early 2000s, everyone was painting and doing faux finishing,” says Sarah Merenda, founder of Merenda Wallpaper. But “there is currently a spotlight on wallpaper, and I find that people are interested in custom and large-scale designs. Printing digitally has been a game changer for the wallpaper world.”
