'Subliminal' Colorful Mixed Media Contemporary Abstract by Steven H. Rehfeld
Located in Carmel, CA
This 20" x 30" contemporary abstract mixed media piece by Steven Rehfeld is a captivating exploration of form, color, and texture. The composition features a harmonious blend of soft pastel hues — calming blues, delicate pinks, and mellow yellows — juxtaposed against more assertive tones of deep magenta, vibrant orange, and charcoal gray. The painting showcases Rehfeld's signature style of blending geometric shapes, notably triangles and circles, with freer, more organic brushstrokes. The added depth is achieved through the inclusion of mixed media elements: fragments of paper with faint sketches, scribbles, and translucent overlays create a multidimensional visual experience. The smoky, sinuous black mark towards the center adds a hint of dynamism, while the layered application of paint and paper produces a tactile richness, making the piece an engaging visual journey. Steven is now one of the top emerging artists in the U.S. His works are groundbreaking, bold, and imbued with unflinching disregard for painting conventions. Many works are in collections and museums in the U.S. Steven is also part of the 'Outsiders' school of art, originating in France in the 19th century. Also known as the Naïve movement, and was comprised of people with no art training at all, who suddenly started to paint. Many of them are from very challenging backgrounds. All they had was talent that had never before been tapped. In no time this movement became a significant art phenomenon and spread all over the world. His work, however, has branched out past the movement and his use of earth elements renders a basic and raw interpretation of his message. Original, 1-of-1. Shown at the American Art Gallery, Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. Keywords: colorful, mixed media, contemporary, abstract, expressionism, blue, pink, yellow, magenta, orange, grey, Steven H...

Money Lending Business (Lock Stock Guy Ritchie) - Shotgun Shells Art
Located in Manchester, GB
Jasper Leadbeater, Money Lending Business, 2025 Upcycled shotgun shells and spraypaint 58 x 70 cm (22.8 x 27.56 in) Edition of 6 Jasper is completely self taught. Having started his journey with a background in fine art and a passion for drawing, years of pencil commissions soon followed and became the foundations of what was to come. Curiosity led him to experiment with shotgun shells and he created the Ho Chi Minh piece in 2014, under the theme of 'War and Peace'. Having refined this unique medium over the years, immersion in the countryside gave inspiration to his first collection of works; combining the traditional country sport of shooting game with a contemporary approach to animal portraiture, creating original pieces using intricately hand-drawn and hand-cut stencils with spray paint. Progress and experimentation has led Jasper to focus his recent works on pop culture references and cinematic icons. A gritty, show-stopping portrait of Vinnie Jones, inspired by his iconic role in Guy Ritchie’s cult classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Constructed from upcycled shotgun shell casings, this powerful mixed media piece fuses urban art with industrial materials, capturing the raw energy and bravado of British gangster cinema. The golden brass shell backdrop contrasts sharply with the black-and-white figure, echoing the stylized tension of 1990s crime films. More than just a portrait, Vinnie is a tribute to the explosive visual style made famous by Guy Ritchie, and a clever reuse of materials once associated with violence, now transformed into fine art. Professionally framed in a brushed metallic frame, this original artwork is perfect for collectors of urban art, contemporary mixed media, or fans of British film legends. Related categories: Vinnie Jones, Guy Ritchie, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, British gangster art, upcycled artwork, shotgun shell art...

Homage to Matisse
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork by noted American artist Inez Storer, b. 1933 is titled Homage to Matisse. The piece is composed of mixed media (oil paint, board, latex) with collage on board. The artwork measures 24 x 24 inches (25 x 25 inches, framed.) It is floating in a simple painted wood frame. It is hand signed in the lower right corner of the frame by the artist. The piece is in very good condition. I am estimating this work was created some time in the 1990s based on the subject and style, but that is only an educated guess. About the artist: From Inverness, California, north of San Francisco and working from a studio in Point Reyes, Inez Storer creates mixed-media narrative paintings, collages and assemblages in naive-sophisticated style, which she describes as Magic Realism: "I am a visual raconteur. I use paint to tell stories." Most of these stories are explorations of the human condition with characters who seem allegorically to be walking tightropes. She gets many ideas from her studio collection of old...

Letrianus Aerus
Located in Los Angeles, CA
In James' paintings, he explores how uncertainty can lead to meaning and understanding. How harmony can be experienced even within tension and chaos and how the recognizable can rise out of purely abstract form. In his abstract paintings he responds to these phenomena by creating contemporary icons – works meant to encourage contemplation and meditation. James' more recent works have evolved from the romantic representational ideal into the symbolic, abstract archetype. He comes from a classical background inspired by the great romantic landscape painters such as Turner, Lorrain, Friedrich and Moran, his recent work is more influenced by the work of artists like Klee, Miro, Rothko, Pollock, Riley and Richter. James creates complex abstractions layered in familiarity and veiled in mysteriousness. The unorthodox methods he uses to apply and move oil paint allow him to create compositions that are formally beautiful – infused with tension and drama but also expressive of the spiritual, symbolic, mysterious and eternal. James' work counters...

"4+4", sculpture, clay, ceramic, abstract, contemporary, tribal, disc, geometry
Located in Toronto, Ontario
4+4, a ceramic sculpture of high-fired clay pigmented with oxides, is a work by New York artist Harold Wortsman. Note the blending of geometric and organic forms in this work – it is characteristic of his practice – warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, primitive traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets. From Harold Wortsman – "With sculpture, my material of choice is high-fired clay. Pieces are first low-fired in an electric kiln. I do not use glazes. Instead, I use oxides applied to the bisqued (low-fired) clay. As with a tattoo, oxides permit the surface underneath to breathe. The work is then high-fired in a gas kiln with double reduction to cone 10. The final temperature is 2,300 degrees F. At a certain point, oxygen intake is reduced to the kiln. Because the fire has reached a critical mass, it needs oxygen and chemically takes it from the clay and the oxides painted on. Like a jazz improvisation, each kiln load comes out slightly different." From Jonathan Goodman, Poet & Art Critic – "Wortsman re-examines ancient and modern traditions in light of what it means to make art." – Tussle Magazine, July 2019. Harold Wortsman is a sculptor and printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. He “creates forms that bring to mind archaic cult objects and exude a quiet concentrated strength.” (Argauer Zeitung, Switzerland). His work, an edgy mix of freedom and clarity, can be found in public and private collections in the US, including The Library of Congress, Yale University, The New York Public Library Print Collection, The New York Historical Society, Smith College, Indiana University’s Lilly Library, Brandeis University, The Newark Public Library Special Collections Division, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum Print Archive. Also in private and public collections in Europe, including the Municipal Collection of the City of Brugg, Switzerland. Harold studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, with sculptor George Spaventa...

Flirt
Located in New York, NY
Chellis Baird Flirt, 2021 plaster cast, 20 x 24 x 4 inches, edition of 10 American artist Chellis Baird blurs the intersection of painting, sculpture and textiles. Baird explores the elements of painting by reconstructing canvases from a unique perspective. Her bespoke process begins with woven structures as her base. Each canvas starts with neutral toned materials that are then painted, dyed and sculpted into dimensional brushstrokes. She creates compositions through a series of twists, knots, and upcycled textiles. Baird’s background in dance and women's fashion allows her to dress the canvas with imagination. Not unlike a garment, she uses color to emphasize the authenticity and body of each piece. Baird received her BFA in textiles from Rhode Island School of Design and studied studio art at the Art Students League in New York City. Baird’s first solo museum exhibition, TETHERED, was held at the Myrtle Beach...

Untitled (Līnea Study), 2022
Located in Washington, DC
Original work on Arches paper by Mary Early. "The production, or “pouring,” of beeswax elements has become a meditative process that is integral to my art practice, serving as an observation of time, materials, and space. The raw beeswax I use has taken its form at the end of a long series of natural processes followed by a manufacturing process, and once it is in my hands, the studio becomes a factory. I apply my own methods of transforming the material by casting the beeswax into three-dimensional forms. Once I have fixed both a place and a time in the future for a potential installation, I begin to determine how the beeswax lines will take their aggregated shape in that space and, simultaneously, how many lines might be manufactured for that particular space in the amount of time available." Mary Early (born 1975, Washington, DC) lives and works in Washington, DC. She studied visual art, film, and video at Bennington College, and her work has been exhibited at the United States Botanic Garden, Washington Project for the Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Second Street Gallery (Charlottesville, VA), Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington DC,) the Austrian Cultural Forum (Washington DC), Galerie Im Ersten (Vienna, Austria), Kloster Schloss Salem (Salem, Germany), Kunstlerbund Tubingen (Tubingen, Germany), and the American University Museum (Washington DC) among other regional and national galleries. Her early work incorporated formed concrete, tarpaper and paraffin wax, fabricated wood structures, and, increasingly over the years, surfaces coated with wax as a method of preserving or concealing an object within. Recent works have relied solely on solid forms cast in wax, abandoning the use of any permanent armature. Temporary installations are guided by schematic drawings and plans, which then serve as a permanent record. In 2014 she exhibited her first large-scale installation of wax lines at Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, followed by temporary installations in response to various historical sites in Salem, Germany (2016) and Tubingen Germany (2017). In 2017 she participated in the exhibition “Twist-Layer-Pour” at the American University Museum, which included Untitled [Curve], an installation of thousands of beeswax lines assembled on the floor of the museum. In spring 2018 she was commissioned to create a temporary installation at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Sun Valley Idaho. This work took the form of two intersecting curtains of hanging beeswax lines bisecting a 12’ foot x 18’ foot room, providing an immersive and enclosed viewing space. Early’s work is included in the collections of the US Department of State/Embassy of Panama, Kimpton Hotels, and the District of Columbia Art Bank among other public and private collections. She is a recipient of the Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on Arts & Humanities, Washington DC (2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2007). Early is the director of HEMPHILL Fine Arts, Washington, DC, and serves on the boards of Hamiltonian Artists and Washington Sculptors Group. She handles the work of contemporary artists and artist estates, including the work of William Christenberry, Colby Caldwell, Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi, Linling Lu, Mingering Mike, Robin Rose, Renée Stout...

Mixed media is distinct from multimedia, which describes art involving electronic media, including video, computers and digital elements. Artists combine painting, drawing, photography and sculpture for mixed media art. Instead of sticking to one form, they aim to break boundaries and create unique pieces. Pop art is one of the vibrant periods for mixed media art, with Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg among its most fabled producers. Rauschenberg, like many mixed media artists, used found objects in his work, from cast-off furniture to newspapers.

Collage is one of the most well-known areas of mixed media. Artists use various types of paper, fabric, photographs and more to create one cohesive work. A type of collage is assemblage, which involves 3D objects.

While artists may use fabric in collage, it can be the very substance of the art itself. Fabric art makes extensive use of texture. Artists may paint or embroider on fabric to create layers of texture and color to evoke a specific feeling. They can also transfer photos onto fabric for innovative ways to display visuals.

Resin-based art has clean, sharp lines and a definitive shape. Resin is a liquid that hardens to a high-gloss surface and is used to seal wood, counters and floors. Resin can also seal artwork, and many artists tint it using pigment powder, ink, spray paint and other vivid materials. If water is added, the resin will turn milky instead of being completely transparent. It’s common for artists working in mixed media to use resin on nontraditional surfaces like glass, wood, metal and stone. This creates a shine that’s perfect to brighten a dull space in the home or office.
