Meadow in Snow - Contemporary Landscape Oil Painting, 21st Century

Meadow in Snow - Contemporary Landscape Oil Painting, 21st Century

By Jeff Aeling

Located in Chicago, IL

Aeling’s affinity for the Great Plains—rooted in decades of traveling the Dakotas, Wyoming, and eastern Colorado—emerges in this broad expanse of snow under a crystalline winter sky. The almost abstract simplicity of the forms recalls the painter’s belief that landscape can be reduced to elemental relationships: light to shadow, land to air, distance to nearness. The softness of the snow’s surface belies the severity of the environment. As in many of his winter scenes, Aeling captures both the emptiness and the quiet majesty of western space. Jeff Aeling Meadow in Snow Oil on panel 24h x 36w in 60.96h x 91.44w cm JAE043 Jeff Aeling (1958–2025): The Sky Remembers Through Jeff Aeling’s eyes, the landscape becomes a world shaped as much by air as by earth. In works such as North of Las Vegas, NM and Pond Near St. Cloud, MN, he balances the quiet structure of plains and wetlands with skies alive in constant motion. His mastery of atmosphere is unmistakable in Light Pillars (2023) and Light Pillar (2023), where rare optical events turn night into architecture. Even intimate scenes like Crabapple, Dogwoods, and Red Bud find their emotional power under skies that lend the land its shifting character. Aeling’s winters in Hawaii deepened his sensitivity to movement and weather. Surfing taught him to read the rhythm of the ocean, a knowledge reflected in Wave, Kauai (2018), where a breaking wave becomes a luminous wall of force. In Volcano (2023), he channels the islands’ elemental drama, linking fire, vapor, and sky through the same atmospheric vocabulary found in his plains paintings...

The Virgin and Child Enthroned
The Virgin and Child Enthroned

The Virgin and Child Enthroned

Located in London, GB

Studio of Adriaen Isenbrandt 1510 - 1551 The Virgin and Child Enthroned Oil on oak panel, wax seal verso Image size: 10 3/4 x 8 inches (27 x 20.5 cm) Contemporary style frame (image below) POA Provenance Collection of Mrs Marianne Hudson Mary, holding Jesus in her arms, is centrally positioned against a gold detailed architectural backdrop, reflecting the traditional iconography of the enthroned Virgin and Child. This composition suggests the theme of “Maestà” or “Majesty,” emphasising the figures religious significance. In the painting from the studio of Adriaen Isenbrandt, the artist masterfully infuses the scene with rich symbolism and hidden meanings that reflect the cultural and religious context of the period. The infant Christ, seated on the Virgin Mary’s lap, is draped in a delicate, translucent white garment that symbolises his purity. In his hand, he clutches a piece of coral, a multifaceted symbol representing immortality, youth, and health. Notably, coral was also a common teething tool during that era, adding another layer of contemporary relevance. A scarlet-headed blackbird, native to South America, perches gracefully on Christ’s outstretched finger. This bird is a potent symbol of creation and protection, enhancing the divine narrative of the scene. Mary, with a tender and loving gesture, caresses Christ’s back while gazing adoringly at her son, underscoring her role as the nurturing mother of God. Mary is centrally positioned within an architectural alcove, which subtly suggests a heavenly halo without explicitly depicting one. The alcove’s niches, traditionally used to emphasise the importance of sculptures, further highlight her significance. She is adorned in a voluminous red gown, with the undulating folds of the fabric accentuated by white highlights. The red colour of her dress symbolises maternal qualities, while the iridescent blue undercoat, visible in certain areas, signifies sanctity and purity due to its rarity and expense at the time. Moreover, Mary is depicted as the epitome of contemporary Medieval...

The Masque of Comus

The Masque of Comus

Located in Atlanta, GA

"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain." --Thaddeus Radell

View of Sorrento, Mediterranean Coastal Seascape Oil Painting

View of Sorrento, Mediterranean Coastal Seascape Oil Painting

By Oscar Ricciardi

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 34,5 x 46,5 x 5,5 cm Signed "O. Ricciardi" in the lower right corner. This luminous coastal painting presents a tranquil view of Sorrento, depicting a solitary fisherman working from a small wooden boat in calm waters beneath the region’s characteristic sunlit cliffs. The composition captures the serene beauty of the Bay of Naples, where rugged limestone shores meet a glassy sea under a clear Mediterranean sky. Rendered in oil with refined, impressionistic brushwork, the artist conveys both atmosphere and light with remarkable sensitivity. Soft turquoise and sandy tones shimmer across the water’s surface, while delicate reflections enhance the sense of stillness. A distant sailboat glides across the horizon, adding depth and narrative balance to the scene. The sweeping coastline, dotted with vegetation and pale architectural forms, evokes the historic settlements perched along the cliffs of Sorrento. In the foreground, the fisherman provides a human focal point, emphasizing the timeless maritime life of the region. The painting reflects the long tradition of Italian coastal landscape painting, prized for its decorative elegance and tranquil mood. Its harmonious palette and airy composition make it particularly well suited for both traditional and contemporary interiors. An evocative Mediterranean marine scene, ideal for collectors of Italian landscapes as well as designers seeking refined coastal artwork. Chasmanthium Insignias: Abstract Encaustic Painting with Green, Earth Tones

By Allyson Levy

Located in Hudson, NY

Abstract encaustic painting with a green, earth toned palette. Made with natural plant material (Northern Sea Oats) "Chasmanthium Insignias I" made by Allyson Levy in 2021 encaustic and plant material on wood panel, 24 x 24 x 1 inches Lightweight, hangs with one d-ring, Signed, verso This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. A fascination with earth’s bounty is expressed with her works in encaustic. Assorted organic material such as leaves, seeds, branches, insect wings...

By Constant David Ludovic Artz

Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire

Constant Ludovic Artz Dutch, (1870-1951) Mother Duck & Ducklings Oil on panel, signed Image size: 9.5 inches x 15.25 inches Size including frame: 16.5 inches x 22.25 inches A delightful painting of a mother duck with her ducklings by constant Ludovic Artz. A white duck can be seen sitting on a river bank surrounded by her five ducklings. Two of the ducklings are shown taking rest by her side as the others forage close by. Constant David Ludovic Artz was born in Paris on 3 June, 1870, the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) and Josephine Jouanin. His father was a Dutch artist who had moved his family to Paris to set up a studio. The family returned to Holland in 1874 and settled in the Hague. Artz was taught art by his father and at the age of 12 enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He also received tuition from Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) who had an influence on his subject matter. He married Johanna Sophia Cecilia Ginjoolen at the Hague on 5 July, 1893. One of the witnesses was the artist Tony Offermans (1854-1911) whom he was apprenticed to at his studio. The couple went on to have two children together and to supplement his income, Artz also worked as an art teacher. One of his pupils was Leendert Scheltema (1876-1966). After divorcing from his first wife in 1915, he married Lucie Sophie van der Hoeven in 1917. At some point he moved to Soestdijk, living there until 1926 when he relocated to Katwijk at Sea in. He returned to Soestdijk in 1931 where he died on 23 February, 1951. Like his father, Artz was fascinated by nature and after painting a series of landscapes and seascapes began producing scenes featuring ducks and waterfowl usually on or by lakes and rivers. He was an expert at painting the play of light upon water and also preferred to work with smaller canvasses. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum. Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine...
