Le Avventure di Cerbiattino ("The Adventures of the Little Fawn") is an original artwork realized by Sandro Nardini in the 1950s. Tempera, china ink, and pencil on paper. Very good conditions. This artwork includes 24 unbound sheets: 10 numbered and 14 unnumbered sheets. The numeration is written in pencil on the back of each sheet. It is an artist's proof for the illustrated book "The adventures of the Little Fawn" (original Italian title: "Le Avventure di Cerbiattino"). The artworks are lovely for the brilliance and the vividness of the colors: one episode of the story is represented on each sheet. The first sheet is the cover of the book. Philippe Halsman was at one point considered the best photo-portraitist in France. He had an incessant interest in faces: “Every face I see seems to hide—and sometimes fleetingly reveal—the mystery of another human being.” Halsman’s photographs of politicians, celebrities, and intellectuals were featured widely in magazines like LIFE and Vogue. Dorado, a Gato-class submarine, was sunk off the coast of Cuba by a German land mine. Georges Schreiber (1904-1977) commemorates the sinking of the USS Dorado submarine in this 1944 War Bonds poster entitled Fire Away for the Fifth War Loan. Schreiber sailed aboard the ship in the summer of 1943 and had a personal connection to the tragedy. USS Dorado (SS-248) was a Gato-class submarine. Her keel was laid down on 27 August 1942 by the Electric Boat Company of Groton, Connecticut and was commissioned on 28 August 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Earle Caffrey Schneider. He immigrated to the United States in 1891, later adopting his mother’s maiden name of Nordfeldt. Beginning his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago where he was chosen to assist fellow artist, Albert Herter, with a large mural project for the McCormick Harvester Company. In 1900, he was sent to Paris by McCormick to help set up the completed mural at the Paris Exposition. While there, he studied briefly at the Academie Julian before traveling to England to study woodblock printmaking under F. Morley Fletcher. Returning to Chicago in 1903, Nordfeldt would spend the next ten years painting mainly figurative works in an academic style similar to that of the Old Masters.
