Gorbals Boys (1948) - Silver Gelatin Fibre Print
Located in London, GB
Gorbals Boys (1948) - Silver Gelatin Fibre Print (Photo by Bert Hardy/Getty Images Archive London) Possibly Bert Hardy's most famous image. Two boys in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The Gorbals tenements were built quickly and cheaply in the 1840s, providing housing for Glasgow's burgeoning population of industrial workers. Conditions were appalling; overcrowding was standard and sewage and water facilities inadequate. The tenements housed about 40,000 people with up to eight family members sharing a single room, 30 residents sharing a toilet and 40 sharing a tap. By the time this photograph was taken 850 tenements had been demolished since 1920. Redevelopment of the area began in the late 1950s and the tenements were replaced with a modern tower block complex in the sixties. Original Publication: Picture Post - 4499 - The Forgotten Gorbals - pub. 1948 Additional Information: Unframed Paper Size: 20 x 16'' inches / 51 x 41 cm Printed 2024 Silver Gelatin Fibre Print Limited edition issued and stamped on front by the Getty Archive London Edition size 300 only NOTE OTHER SIZES OF THIS IMAGE AVAILABLE 10 x 8'' 10 x 12'' 12 x 16'' 16 x 20'' 20 x 24'' FRAMING AVAILABLE ON REQUEST Bert Hardy Albert William Thomas Hardy (19 May 1913 – 3 July 1995) was an English documentary and press photographer known for his work published in the Picture Post magazine between 1941 and 1957. Life and work Born in Blackfriars, Bert Hardy rose from humble working class origins in Southwark, London. The eldest of seven children, he left school at age 14 to work for a chemist who also processed photos. His first big sale came in 1936 when he photographed King George V and Queen Mary in a passing carriage during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, and sold 200 small prints of his best view of the King. His first assignment, at age 23, was to photograph Hungarian actor Sakall at the Mayfair Hotel. Hardy freelanced for The Bicycle magazine, and bought his first small-format 35 mm Leica. He signed on with the General Photographic Agency as a Leica photographer, later founding his own freelance firm, Criterion. General Photographic Agency General Photographic Agency a Fleet Street, London agency, sold photos at least between 1880-1950. Picture Post and World War II In 1941, Hardy was recruited by the then editor Tom Hopkinson of the leading picture publication of the 1930s to the 1950s, Picture Post. Founded in 1938 and funded by publisher Edward Hulton, the magazine's first editor was Hungarian émigré Stefan Lorant (1901–97) assisted by Hopkinson, who took over as editor from 1940. The picture-centric, left-leaning and reasonably-priced publication was highly successful and circulation soon rose to over a million. Hardy's photographer colleagues included Felix H. Watercolor Painting American Modern Painting Gloucester Harbor Female Artist
Located in Buffalo, NY
Dorothy Rivo Gloucester Harbor, c. 1950s Watercolor and ink on paper Framed dimensions: 34 in. H × 30 in. W Contemporary black frame with white archival mat In Gloucester Harbor, Dorothy Rivo captures the gritty beauty of a working port with expressive brushwork and tonal depth. The scene unfolds in loose washes of ochre, rust, and charcoal, where weathered boats float before a jagged row of fishing sheds and coastal structures rendered in gestural lines. Rather than striving for topographic precision, Rivo offers a painterly impression of the harbor—moody, atmospheric, and undeniably alive. The smudged foreground, dripping masts, and clouded sky convey both movement and memory, as if the harbor were emerging from a dream or dissolving into one. Executed in watercolor and ink, this piece shows Rivo's command of mixed media and her deft ability to balance structure with spontaneity. It is a standout example of mid-century American waterfront painting...

Gauguin, Spirit of the Dead (Manaò tupapaú), Gauguin (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
Woodcut on vélin Utopian paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good Condition. Notes: From the folio, Gauguin, A portfolio of 12 color woodblocks, Paul Gauguin, French, 1848-1903 from the collection of the Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston, 1946. Rendered by Albert Carman (1899-1949); published the Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston and The Studio Publications, Inc., New York and London; printed by Holme Press Inc., New York, in an edition of MMMD. Excerpted from the folio, Paul Gauguin and Emil Bernard at Pont-Aven, Brittany, in 1888, each made a bas-relief, wooden panel to decorate a piece of furniture for a friend. In order to keep a record of their designs, a few inked impressions were made on paper. The illustration at left is a reproduction of a print which is possibly one of the above mentioned. It is further possible that this experiment later gave Gauguin the idea of making woodcuts. Just as his work in painting expressed a revolt against the overemphasis on factual representation of the nineteenth century in favor of decorative pattern and color, so also his woodcuts leaned strongly to the same side of the balance. Ten of the cuts reproduced (all excepting Soyez Amoureuses and Changement de Residence), which constitute the whole of his best known series, were made at Pont-Aven beginning in the fall of 1894, after Gauguin's return from his first trip to Tahiti and after he broke his ankle. They were at first roughly cut with a common carpenter's gouge, and the flat surfaces sandpapered and engraved with a sharp in-strument, perhaps an engraver's burin. A few trial proofs were printed in black ink only. Then the hollows were deepened with a woodcutter's gouge and highlights were added. An edition of thirty to fifty impressions of each subject, with the addition of color blocks (one, two or three), was made by Louis Roy...

WE’RE OVER THR MOUNTAIN (Wir sind überm Berg)
Located in Santa Monica, CA
ANDREAS PAUL WEBER (German 1893 – 1980) WE’RE OVER THR MOUNTAIN (Wir sind überm Berg) (A68, D2718) Lithograph over tinted ground, signed in pencil and in monogram in the stone. Image, 14 ½ x 19 1/4. Large full sheet with watermark and deckle edge, 24 ½ x 19 ¼. In very good condition. The A. Paul Weber Museum was inaugurated in Ratzeburg in 1973. Andreas Paul Weber died on 9 November 1980. This important German lithographer, draughtsman and painter bequeathed a comprehensive œuvre, in which critical satirical works figure prominently. THE WEBER MUSEUM HAS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND A BIOGRAPHY The following is a biography taken from the prominent German auction house KETTERER /KUNST: Andreas Paul Weber attended secondary modern school in Arnstadt between 1903 and 1910 before briefly attending the School for the Decorative and Applied Arts in Erfurt. In 1908 Weber joined the 'Jungwandervogel', a movement which sought to develop a new, modern lifestyle based on walking and living close to nature. At the same time Andreas Paul Weber began experimenting with lithography and worked as a commercial artist. When the first world war broke out, Weber served as a railway engineer on the Eastern Front, where he worked for the army as a draughtsman from 1916. After the war Andreas Paul Weber illustrated numerous books, including Till Eulenspiegel, Reineke Fuchs and the critical contemporary work Der Zeitgenosse by Hjalmar Kutzleb, which were Weber's first successes. In 1925 Weber founded the 'Clan-Presse' ['Clan Press'], where he and his son Christian printed...

Gauguin, Offerings of Gratitude (Maruru), Gauguin (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
