The couple painted extensively throughout southern Louisiana, finding inspiration in its bayous, swamps, waterways and moss-draped landscapes, as well as in the streets and architecture of the French Quarter. During the Heldners' years there, the French Quarter was home to a lively and famously bohemian community of artists, writers and colorful local characters. Knut Heldner, who received his early artistic training in Europe, brought a distinctly painterly approach to the Louisiana landscape, capturing not simply its appearance but its light, atmosphere and often mysterious mood.
