Impressionist Art

IMPRESSIONIST STYLE

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.

The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.

Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

Located in Knokke, BE

Julien Celos 1884 – Antwerp – 1953 Belgian Painter 'Mother and Child in Zeeland' Signature: signed lower middle left 'Julien Célos' Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: image size 64 x 52 cm; frame size 84 x 73 cm Biography: Julien Célos (Antwerp, 30 September 1884 – 8 September 1953) was a Belgian painter and etcher, born to a French father, celebrated for his poetic views of Flemish towns and his remarkable colour prints. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Franz Courtens and also benefited from the teaching of Albert Baertsoen, whose influence is evident in his taste for urban atmospheres, misty canals and subtle tonalities. Working at a time when luminism shaped much Belgian painting, Célos adopted certain aspects of its research into light and atmospheric effects while maintaining a distinctive, calm and lyrical sensibility. The greater part of his output was devoted to rural landscapes and the towns of Belgian Flanders—Bruges, Mechelen, Ghent and Antwerp—as well as Zeeland in the Netherlands and various regions of France. Bruges and Mechelen occupied a privileged place in his iconography: beguinages, narrow alleys, silent quays and ancient squares became the motifs of an intimate and timeless painting. He also travelled in Brittany and spent several months in Tunisia on a study trip. Alongside his painting, Julien Célos developed an important body of graphic work, notably colour etchings published by prestigious firms such as Georges Petit in Paris, Dietrich in Brussels and Caspers in Berlin. In both technique and subject matter, his work is comparable to that of artists such as Emmanuel Viérin. Highly active in Belgian artistic circles, he was a member of the Antwerp artists’ association Als Ik Kan, founded in 1883 and active until 1952, as well as of the committee of La Gravure Originale Belge. Even before the First World War, Julien Célos enjoyed notable critical recognition. In 1907 he took part in the Exposition Générale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, presenting oils, etchings, pastels and drawings, including En ville morte, Automne and L’Église à Veere. The following year he received an honourable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1914 he again exhibited in Brussels and at the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire, where the press praised the poetry of his urban views and the excellence of his colour etchings. Like many Belgian artists, he lived in exile in England and the Netherlands during the First World War. This period was marked by intense exhibition activity: in 1915 he participated in a major exhibition in Brighton devoted to the new Belgian painting, alongside James Ensor, Félicien Rops, Emile Claus, Albert Baertsoen and Théo van Rysselberghe, where he was described as “one of the finest artists in interpreting the picturesque character of small Flemish towns.” That same year his works were shown at the Royal Institute in London and in a solo exhibition of forty-five pieces at the Goupil Gallery. In 1917 he exhibited in Amsterdam with Alfred Van Neste...

Bullfighting Scene Oil Painting, Figurative Expressionism, 1950s

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Title: Bullfighting Scene Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (1919-1986) Technique: Oil on board Dimensions: 25.6 x 21.3 in (65 x 54 cm) Frameless Period: Second half of the 20th century Art Movement: Figurative Expressionism with Impressionist influences Condition: Good, with visible signs of aging on the surface DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK This painting captures a crucial moment in a bullfight, where the matador, dressed in a dazzling traje de luces (suit of lights), elegantly holds the red cape (muleta) while facing a wounded bull. The scene conveys tension and drama through energetic and loose brushwork, with strong contrasts of light and color that enhance its expressiveness. The abstract background, built with gestural brushstrokes in warm, earthy tones, reinforces the dynamism and immediacy of the moment. The thick texture of the paint and the vibrant colors in the matador's attire and cape are characteristic of Figurative Expressionism, giving the work a strong emotional impact. Tuser masterfully captures the essence of movement and the intensity of the bullfight through a painterly approach reminiscent of Impressionism, but with a greater emphasis on gesture and expressive color, making his work stand out for its raw energy and dramatic depth. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 - 1986) was a Spanish painter specialized in bullfighting themes, gaining recognition in the 20th-century art scene for his expressive depictions of the corrida (bullfight). He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona, where he developed a strong mastery of color and composition. From 1947 onwards, his work focused almost entirely on bullfighting, creating posters, illustrations, and paintings that capture the emotion and spectacle of the arena. He was a frequent collaborator with El Ruedo magazine, where his illustrations and covers solidified his reputation. Additionally, in the 1940s, he designed series of postcards featuring traditional Spanish costumes for the Artigas Publishing House. His work has been auctioned in several art houses and is highly valued among collectors of bullfighting paintings. His influence and legacy in tauromaquia (bullfighting art...

Edgar Degas, Dancer Standing in Profile, 1945 (after)

By Edgar Degas

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Edgar Degas (1834–1917), titled Danseur debout de profil (Dancer Standing in Profile), originates from the 1945 folio Degas, Ten Ballet Sketches. Published by The Studio Publications, Inc., New York, rendered and printed by Albert Carman, City Island, 1945, this work reflects Degas’s sensitive mastery of line, movement, and intimate observation, capturing the grace, poise, and psychological immediacy that define his iconic ballet imagery. In Danseur debout de profil (Dancer Standing in Profile), Degas reveals gesture and inner emotion through economical contour and lyrical nuance. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, this work measures 17 x 13 inches (43.18 x 33.02 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. Rendered and printed by Albert Carman, City Island, one of the notable American ateliers specializing in fine art lithography during the mid-20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Edgar Degas (1834–1917) Title: Danseur debout de profil (Dancer Standing in Profile), from Degas, Ten Ballet Sketches, 1945 Medium: Lithograph and pochoir on velin paper Dimensions: 17 x 13 inches (43.18 x 33.02 cm) Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued Date: 1945 Publisher: The Studio Publications, Inc., New York Printer: Albert Carman, City Island, 1945 Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1945 folio Degas, Ten Ballet Sketches, published by The Studio Publications, Inc., New York Notes: Excerpted from the album, Born in Paris in 1834, Edgar Degas lived, and surely loved the life of that city during most of his years. These continued somewhat sadly beyond those of most of his friends— into the debacle of the first World War, during which he died in 1917. Judging by the frequency with which he used them as models, he must have had an especial admiration for the ballet girls who followed a profession that at the time brought none of the glory and prosperity which attend it today. New aspects of the human body, revealed in movement, fascinated him. But his occupation with the simply anatomical side of his subjects never resulted in a cold interpretation. On the contrary there is a warmth and sympathy that pervades all of his work. The drawings here represent the painter in one important phase of his multi-sensitive view of life; and permit an insight which a more ambitious work might not do-into the operation of the creative process, the artist's transformation of reality as it passes through the mesh of his sensibilities. The Edition of this Portfolio is limited to MMMD examples. Rendered by Albert Carman. About the Publication: Degas, Ten Ballet Sketches, published in 1945 by The Studio Publications, Inc., New York, stands as one of the most elegant and scholarly mid-century American fine art folios devoted to the ballet imagery of Edgar Degas. Conceived as a high-quality interpretive portfolio, the album presents a series of lithograph-and-pochoir renderings based on Degas’s original drawings, executed with exceptional attention to tonal subtlety, contour fidelity, and the emotional interiority that defines the artist’s draftsmanship. Rendered and printed by Albert Carman on City Island, the publication embodies an American postwar effort to restore and celebrate European masterworks through meticulous handcraft and artisanal color application, honoring Degas’s distinctive line and the atmospheric delicacy of his studio-based studies. Produced in a substantial edition of MMMD examples, the portfolio offered audiences rare access to Degas’s private working drawings—images rarely seen outside institutional collections—while exemplifying the technical refinement and interpretive care characteristic of Carman’s workshop. Today, Degas, Ten Ballet Sketches remains a sought-after historical publication, valued for its craft, fidelity to Degas’s aesthetic, and its role in preserving and disseminating the artist’s intimate ballet imagery in a beautifully executed mid-century fine art format. About the Artist: Edgar Degas (1834–1917) was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor whose groundbreaking fusion of classical draftsmanship, modern experimentation, and psychological depth helped define the trajectory of Western art, positioning him as one of the most influential figures of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; renowned for his depictions of ballet dancers, racehorses, theater scenes, cafe life, domestic interiors, milliners, laundresses, and women at their toilette, Degas reimagined observational realism through radical compositional innovation—employing extreme cropping, asymmetrical framing, oblique viewpoints, and dramatic lighting that anticipated photographic and cinematic language long before these technologies shaped visual culture, and although associated with Impressionism, he rejected plein-air spontaneity in favor of studio-based discipline rooted in the linear precision of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, the expressive chromaticism of Eugene Delacroix, and the modernity of Edouard Manet while also drawing inspiration from Japanese ukiyo-e prints, classical sculpture, and early photography; his independent artistic philosophy resonated with and helped shape the innovations of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, whose explorations of movement, form, dream logic, abstraction, and conceptualism all find antecedents in Degas’s investigations into seriality, temporality, and the fragmented figure, and his pioneering use of pastel, monotype, and wax sculpture fundamentally transformed each medium, influencing artists from Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Giacomo Manzu to Paula Rego, contemporary realists, experimental photographers, and choreographers; his works are held in nearly every major museum collection worldwide—including the Musee dOrsay, the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Courtauld Institute, and the National Gallery, London—affirming his central place in the history of art, and the highest auction record for Degas was achieved at Sothebys London on February 3, 2015, when Danseuses en Bleu sold for 37,033,000 GBP, cementing his status as one of the most sought-after and enduringly significant artists of the Western canon. “The Ballet Performance”

By Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson

Located in Southampton, NY

Exquisite, original oil on canvas painting of a ballet performance by the well known French artist, Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson. Signed by the artist lower left. Condition is very good. Old wax reline. Solid mahogany wood frame with gold decoration. Overall framed measurements are 24.75 by 33.25 inches. Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson was born in 1878 in Bordeaux. His first exhibition was in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he would later become a member. He received an honourable mention at the age of 23 in 1901, and a third-place medal in 1911. He also exhibited at the Société des Beaux Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. Cosson is a post-impressionist artist who developed a very distinctive style which makes him immediately recognisable among his peers. His passion was to capture a bustling Paris which was the epicentre of the Modern art world at the beginning of the twentieth century. Fascinated by Edgar Degas, he almost invariably followed the themes beloved by the Impressionist Master, such as Parisian women or horse racing. But like for Degas, his most admired works remain his paintings of...
