Post-Impressionist Art

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK Shepherd in the Pyrenees by Enric Porta i Mestre depicts a rural scene with a striking sense of introspection and evocative charm. The painting portrays a shepherd tending to his flock amidst the mountainous landscape typical of the Catalan Pyrenees. The composition captures the serenity and beauty of nature through vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes. The work reflects a Post-Impressionist style with loose, bold strokes and vivid tones, combined with Expressionist influences in its ability to evoke emotions beyond the physical depiction. The energetic and textured brushwork infuses the painting with a lively rhythm, while the rich palette of greens and blues immerses the viewer in the landscape's tranquil atmosphere. In this piece, Porta i Mestre showcases a mastery of color and light, illustrating his deep connection to his homeland and its rural life, which served as a source of inspiration throughout his career. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Enric Porta i Mestre (La Pobla de Segur, 1898–1993) was a Catalan painter known for his landscapes, still lifes, and costumbrist depictions. By Rafael Durancamps

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Title: Sitges Artist: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 38 x 61 cm (14.96 x 24.01 in) Support: Canvas stretched over wooden stretcher Framing: Unframed Signature: Signed lower left: Durancamps Period: 1960s (estimated based on style, technique, and materials) Work Description The painting Sitges depicts an evocative scene of the iconic Catalan coastal town. At the center stands the unmistakable silhouette of the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, surrounded by cascading white houses that descend toward the shore. A solitary fisherman in the foreground casts his rod from the sand, adding a human and melancholic dimension to the landscape. The composition reflects Rafael Durancamps’s mastery in atmospheric construction: the balance between sky, architecture, and figure is achieved through loose yet controlled brushstrokes, and a sober palette dominated by earthy tones, ochres, blues, and greys. The scene conveys stillness, everyday life, and a sense of belonging to the landscape—recurring qualities in the artist’s work. Artist Biography: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979) Born in Sabadell, Rafael Durancamps was one of the leading Catalan figurative painters of the 20th century. Initially trained under Joan Vila Cinca and a friend of Joaquim Mir, he chose a personal path that distanced him from avant-garde movements. In 1926, he moved to Paris, where he founded La Fenêtre Ouverte gallery, bringing together artists such as Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. After permanently returning to Barcelona in 1939, he exhibited regularly at Sala Parés and established a distinctive style rooted in lyrical light, intimate observation of everyday life, and a refined technique—particularly in still lifes, landscapes, and solitary figures. His work is held in major collections, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Montserrat Museum, the Sabadell Art Museum, and the BBVA Collection. Comparable Artists Rafael Durancamps can be linked stylistically or spiritually to several major names in modern figurative art: Joaquim Mir – for his lyrical treatment of the Catalan landscape and vibrant light Santiago Rusiñol – for his poetic approach to architecture and the Mediterranean environment Maurice Utrillo – in his sober and nostalgic depictions of towns and vernacular architecture Edward Hopper – for the silent presence of solitary figures in open spaces Darío de Regoyos...

Title: Provence Village Flower Market Scene Watercolour French Post Impressionist Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 7 x 5 inches Condition: Good overall with light handling to the sheet edges and the natural deckle of the paper; colours remain fresh and surface is sound, consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: A lively and colourful French market scene by Pierre Neveu, capturing the vibrancy of daily life in a Provençal village square. Executed in expressive watercolour, the composition centres around a tree-shaded market stall surrounded by vivid flower displays in pots and baskets. The artist’s confident brushwork and instinctive sense of colour bring the bustling charm of southern France to life—yellow, crimson, and violet blooms set against the warm ochre tones of sunlit village façades. Hints of figures, awnings, and architectural details evoke the gentle rhythm of a Mediterranean morning. Neveu’s fluid handling of the medium allows the paint to breathe and shimmer, suggesting movement, light, and atmosphere rather than rigid form. This scene is typical of his Post-Impressionist style—combining structure and spontaneity to celebrate the poetry of everyday French life. Collectors of French market paintings...

Hermanus Koekkoek Jr Dutch Harbor Scene Oil Jan van Couver Painting

Hermanus Koekkoek Jr Dutch Harbor Scene Oil Jan van Couver Painting

Located in Stockholm, SE

This atmospheric harbour scene by Hermanus Koekkoek Jr., working under the pseudonym Jan van Couver, exemplifies the artist’s mature approach to maritime and town views during his London period. The composition presents a Dutch waterfront animated by boats, windmills, and clustered buildings, all set beneath a vast and dynamic sky. The emphasis on shifting weather conditions and the interaction between water, light, and architecture reflects a deep engagement with both tradition and contemporary developments in nineteenth century painting. Koekkoek belonged to one of the most distinguished artistic dynasties in the Netherlands. As the son of Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder and nephew of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, he inherited a strong foundation in landscape and marine painting. His early training within the family atelier in Amsterdam provided him with a disciplined understanding of composition and natural observation. However, his later move to London in 1869 marked a decisive shift in both style and market orientation. It was during this period that he adopted the name Jan van Couver, a strategic choice that aligned his work with a broader European appeal. The present painting reveals a confident and increasingly free handling of paint. The foreground water is rendered with swift horizontal strokes that capture the movement of the surface, while the boats and harbour structures are constructed through more concentrated applications of pigment. The use of impasto is particularly notable, lending the painting a tactile presence and enhancing the interplay between light and texture. This painterly richness contributes to a vivid sense of immediacy, as if the scene were observed directly on site. The sky dominates the composition, occupying a large portion of the pictorial space. Broad, swirling brushstrokes articulate the mass of clouds, which appear to gather and disperse in response to changing atmospheric conditions. This treatment reflects the influence of the Hague School, whose artists sought to convey the mood and variability of the Dutch landscape through tonal harmony and expressive brushwork. Koekkoek’s interpretation is more animated, however, suggesting an openness to impressionistic tendencies that were gaining ground across Europe. At the same time, the painting remains anchored in a clear compositional structure. The line of the harbour guides the viewer’s eye into the distance, where the forms dissolve into a softer haze. The presence of windmills, a quintessential feature of the Dutch landscape, reinforces the sense of place while also introducing vertical accents that balance the horizontal expanse of water and sky. The architecture is suggested rather than fully defined, allowing atmosphere and light to take precedence over detail. Koekkoek’s work occupies an interesting position between tradition and modernity. While rooted in the conventions of Dutch marine painting...

Mid Century Barcelona Harbor Sailboats Mediterranean Impressionist Oil Painting Artist: Rafael Durán Benet Medium: Oil on canvas laid on board Dimensions: 50 × 61 cm (19.7 × 24 in) Signature: Signed lower right Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good condition. Stable paint surface with visible original brushwork Origin: Spain Period: Mid-20th century Expressive Mediterranean harbor scene depicting sailboats moored in the port of Barcelona by Spanish painter Rafael Durán Benet. The composition captures the luminous waterfront architecture reflected across calm harbor waters, structured by vertical masts and rhythmic dock lines that organize the pictorial space with clarity and balance. Loose impressionist brushwork and a refined palette of blues, violets and warm reflected tones create a vibrant atmospheric surface characteristic of mid-century Mediterranean coastal painting. Particularly notable is the treatment of reflections, executed through layered strokes that enhance depth and movement while reinforcing the decorative strength of the composition. Barcelona harbor scenes remain among the most desirable subjects within Spanish Mediterranean painting due to their architectural identity and strong interior presence. This work belongs to the Catalan Mediterranean luminist tradition associated with Joaquim Mir and Eliseu Meifrèn. Its reflective harbor treatment also connects with the broader European marine painting lineage of Paul Signac and Henri Le Sidaner. Rafael Durán Benet (Barcelona, 1931–2015) was a Spanish painter recognized for Mediterranean harbor scenes, coastal landscapes and urban views of Barcelona. Working within the Catalan postwar impressionist tradition, he developed a luminous pictorial language centered on reflections, atmosphere and architectural shoreline compositions. His paintings of the Barcelona waterfront remain among the most characteristic subjects of his production and are held today in private collections across Spain and Europe.
