Post-Impressionist Art

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

The painting that was chosen is from 1906 when Derain was 26 yrs old and on a trip to London when he was still very much a fauvist. It is a reproduction of "Big Ben", 1906, from a series of works he created on the banks of the Thames. There you can see a completely different feeling than the banks of the Seine, each with it's own beauty. Isn't it always a tale of two cities...? Famous American artist and critic, Leland Bell...

PROVENANCE Private Collection, Madrid Note: We are grateful to Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work which is recorded in the archives of the Artist. Painter born in Bordeaux, in 1889 and died in Paris in 1962. He began painting his mother's portraits very soon. He studied at the National Superior School of Fine Arts. The artist considered his teacher and inspiring Degas. Between 1904 and 1907 he joined Fauvism. In 1905 he participated in the "Autumn Hall" and in the "Hall of Independents". In 1907 he presented his 1st individual exhibition at the Vollard Gallery. He specialized in female portraits of Parisian ladies, creating a unique, sophisticated and elegant female portrait prototype that characterized him forever. He played an essential role in the evolution of women's fashion of his time. He designed numerous dresses, hats and accessories for famous designers such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque It goes down in history as the architect of a new type of woman, thin, with an elegant air, always with style, with unusual elongated necks, with impressive slanted eyes, that seem to look at the world in amazement, perhaps because they express a feeling of freedom towards Society and its norms. With these paintings of women, he showed the world the true French, elegant, beautiful and with a gooseneck. In 1914 he won the Rome Prize. Many celebrities of the time posed for the artist, Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, etc. But although he painted numerous nude actresses...

Mediterranean Hill Town Landscape Expressionist Oil Painting Catalan School art

By Valeri Farras

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Mediterranean Hill Town Landscape Expressionist Oil Painting Catalan School Artist: Valeri Farràs (L’Estany, Barcelona, 1950) Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 × 73 cm (23.6 × 28.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Framed: Unframed Condition: Good overall condition. Stable paint layer with visible impasto and fresh chromatic surface. No restorations observed. DESCRIPTION Expressive Mediterranean hill town landscape painted in oil on canvas by Catalan artist Valeri Farràs. The composition presents a luminous white village rising across the hillside, crowned by the vertical presence of a church tower and structured through layered architectural planes that guide the eye upward through the composition. In the foreground, a diagonal path creates spatial depth while dense green foliage introduces a vibrant chromatic counterpoint to the pale façades. Executed with energetic brushwork and visible impasto, the painting captures the atmospheric vibration of Mediterranean light through a refined palette dominated by blues, violets, warm creams, and fresh greens. The architecture is constructed through rapid chromatic touches rather than linear definition, reinforcing the expressive character of the composition. This work belongs to the tradition of Mediterranean lyrical expressionism, where landscape is interpreted emotionally through color, rhythm, and painterly materiality rather than strict topographical description. With its balanced format and luminous palette, the painting offers strong decorative presence and excellent suitability for modern interiors. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Valeri Farràs (L’Estany, Barcelona, 1950) is a Catalan painter associated with contemporary Mediterranean lyrical expressionism. A largely self-directed artist, he developed a distinctive visual language based on expressive color relationships and spontaneous brushwork, focusing primarily on Mediterranean villages, hillside architecture, and natural environments. His paintings are held in private collections across Europe and reflect a consistent exploration of light, atmosphere, and emotional landscape interpretation within the Catalan pictorial tradition. ARTISTIC CONTEXT This painting can be placed within the broader lineage of Mediterranean expressionist landscape painting associated with artists such as Joaquim Mir, Henri Matisse, and Nicolas de Staël, where architecture and landscape dissolve into chromatic structure and atmospheric sensation. Like these painters, Farràs prioritizes color as the primary vehicle for spatial construction and emotional resonance. Rue St Rustique, Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur Basilica, Paris. Watercolor and Ink.

Located in Cotignac, FR

Mid 20th Century drawing and watercolour of Rue St Rustique in Paris. The drawing is titled and signed bottom left but the signature is as yet undeciphered. Unframed but with a cut card mount. A charming view of one of the oldest streets in Montmartre and Paris leading up to the iconic Sacré-Coeur Basilica. The artist has captured all the charm of this treasured view. They have shown a mastery of their art and wonderful handling of the drawing and watercolour. A lovely evocative painting that would grace any collection or interior. This street in the old village of Montmartre, which existed before the eleventh century as a path, later became an alley that served as a boundary between the seigneuries of Saint-Denis and Montmartre. Called "rue Notre-Dame" around 1516, it is indicated on the map of Jouvin de Rochefort of 1672 as a road. It was classified as part of the Parisian road network by a decree of 23 May...
