Ah, that’s better! Good dog, come along!” John George Sowerby was born into a prosperous Gateshead family of glass manufactures and artists. He inherited the family business, the Ellison Glass Works, one of the world’s largest producers of pressed glass, where he introduced designs inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. Initially he combined his energies at the glass works with his work as an illustrator and painter of landscapes and floral subjects with a Pre-Raphaelite intensity, strong colours and rich detail. He exhibited many of these paintings at the Royal Academy. In the 1880s he collaborated with Newcastle artist, Henry Hetherington Emmerson, on illustrations for the children’s books Afternoon Tea (1880) and The May Blossom (1881). Although were critically very well received but the publications were attacked by Kate Greenaway who considered them too close to her own work. Sowerby then went on to produce highly aesthetic illustrated books At Home (1881) and At Home Again (1883), with decorations by Thomas Crane. Gleeson White, editor of The Studio magazine stated that in Afternoon Tea Sowerby “set a new fashion for ‘aesthetic’ little quartos’ (The Studio, 1897). Roger Dixon in Belfast Publishing (Oxford University Press, 2011, p.79) considered these At Home and At Home Again to be “among the loveliest books ever produced.” Never very wise as a business man, in the early 1880s he left Ellison Glass Works being declared bankrupt in 1884. A substantial and animated coaching scene enlivened by the artist's acute and humorous observation of character and fine equestrian painting. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, George Harrington is known for his, often humorous, anecdotes of American life in the pre-industrial age. His subjects included polo matches, carriage rides and coaching scenes, and pastoral landscapes. After a professional career in business, Harrington studied art and subsequently became a successful landscape and equestrian painter. Unframed Signature: Signed, titled, dated, artist’s stamp on reverse Condition: Very good This photograph depicts the Ross Ice Shelf near ‘Willy Field.’. It is a chromogenic print, also called a C-print on Kodak paper. Klipper traveled to Antarctica in 1989 under the aegis of the National Science Foundation. Some of his photographs from this trip were later included in a New York MoMA exhibit titled “Projects 26 – Stuart Klipper On Antarctica 1989.” The three-foot-wide color panoramas in this exhibition were selected from the series On Antarctica, which comprised more than 1,000 pictures made in 1989. In the exhibition brochure, curator Peter Galassi writes that the artist’s panoramas present “a landscape that is ravishing in its barren beauty, in its inhospitable grandeur, and in the delicacy of its ever-changing hues. The photographs seem to fuse the epic swoon of romanticism with the impersonal rigor of science.” The photograph is in very good condition. The mat is in very good condition. Unframed. Stuart Klipper was born in the Bronx in 1941. He then lived in Stockholm, Sweden, moved to Minneapolis in 1970 and currently resides there. He has made six visits to Antarctica to photograph, and has also worked in Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Alaska and Lapland (in the area irradiated by the Chernobyl disaster). Other major forays have taken him across Northern Australia; the deserts of Israel and Sinai; the tropical rain forests of Costa Rica, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego; and Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He has logged many thousands of miles at sea, photographing on all of the Earth's oceans... and seas. For over 30 years, he has made photographs in all 50 states, distilling and crystallizing the defining characteristics of American regions. Other undertakings include extensively photographing the First World War cemeteries and memorials of the Western Front, major physics and astronomy research installations throughout the U.S. and the Anasazi ruins of the Southwest. His photographs have been exhibited in, and collected by, major museums in the U.S. and overseas; foremost, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Walker Art Center, The Jewish Museum, the Israel Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Kunsthalle Bonn and the Moderna Museet. He has been the recipient of several major grants, including two each from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Bush Foundation, and three each from the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. He is a recipient of the U.S. Navy's Antarctic Service Medal. He was also visiting professor, Art Department, Colorado College, 1978 to 2008. Willard Dixon, who says "the charm of Still Life painting for the artist lies in the ability to manipulate ones subject matter and in the intimate, direct nature of the painting process. It is very much a studio-centric activity, complete and self-sufficient. The objects that one works with do seem to take on a life of their own, both by themselves and in their affinity for one another. They have a history, a patina, they may be new, or world-weary." At the age of fourteen he was accepted to attend Brera Liceo Artistico, one of the most prestigious art academies in Italy, graduating at age eighteen and then went on to win honors from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome eventually receiving the degree of Professor of Fine Arts. He moved to San Francisco where he taught at the Art Institute. Roberto Lupetti (1918 - 1997) was active/lived in California / Italy. Roberto Lupetti is known for Figure, ship, still life painting. Particularly judaic rabbi paintings and Jewish genre scenes. Lupetti earned five degrees from the Italian Royal Academy of Fine Arts, was a team member for the refurbishment of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, and immigrated to the U.S after World War II. Known for his Renaissance art and large murals, he created a few western genre pieces, including a Day in the Life of A Cowboy (5) 5'x10' murals were painted oil on masonite in 1959.
