The former Curator of Oil Paintings at the National Maritime Museum, E H H Archibald, says of Joseph Heard in his Dictionary of Sea Painters in Europe and America that "…with Samuel Walters he must stand as the top-ranking Liverpool ship portraitist of the 19th century." He would have known the artist's work well as the National Maritime Museum has eleven paintings by Heard in its collection.
Joseph Heard was born on 7th March 1799 in Egremont near Whitehaven in Cumberland. His father, also Joseph, was a saddler and it is believed that the aspirant painter received some artistic training from John Clementson who was a local portrait painter. Joseph had a brother Isaac who painted portraits. It is possible that Joseph came across the work of H Collins...

Henry Schafer
German/British, (1841-c.1914)
Chartres, France & Metz, Lorraine
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed
Image size: 10 inches x 8 inches (each)
Size including frame: 15 inches x 13 inches (each)
A lovely pair of French townscape paintings featuring Cathedrals by Henry Schafer. The first offers a view of Metz Cathedral and other medieval buildings from the river Moselle. On the right, figures can be seen at a market stall whilst others walk down a street. Meanwhile to the left, a boat is shown docking at a quayside in front of an archway. The other painting is of Chartres Cathedral seen from a cobbled town square lined with Medieval buildings. Two figures are depicted next to a market stall on the left as others chat or make their way towards the square along a lane to the right.
Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is recorded about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher.
Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914.
Many of his works depict the architecture of gothic cathedrals and churches, as in these two fine examples. He also produced interior studies of churches. Schafer's style resembles that of Alfred Montague...

A Bouquet of Flowers & A Fine Vintage
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed
Image size: 12 inches x 9.75 inches (each)
Size including frame: 16.75 inches x 14.5 inches (each)
A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles.
Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879.
During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co.
He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum.
Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Cecil Legard 'A Judge' Vanity Fair cartoon by Cuthbert "CB" Bradley
Located in London, GB
Cuthbert "CB" Bradley for Vanity Fair Magazine
"A Judge" - The Rev Cecil Legard
11 July 1901
Lithograph
21 x 37 cm
CB's cartoon depicts The Rev Cecil Legard (1843-1918), the Rector of Cottesbrooke and heir to the baronetcy. As well as a clergyman, Legard was a noted sportsman and hound expert; he was a steeplechase rider, and also edited the Foxhound Kennel Stud Book. CB depicts him judging hounds, excellently outfitted; as the biography on the reverse of the mounted lithograph notes, he might be 'the best judge of a foxhound in England'. A copy of the cartoon is held by the Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset.
Cuthbert Bradley was also a sporting man - he famously authored 'Fox-Hunting from Shire to Shire with Many Noted Packs' and worked as a sporting journalist for The Field. As well as illustrating for Vanity Fair, he painted polo and foxhunting scenes, and other pictures of equestrian interest. The majority of his Vanity Fair cartoons are of hunting men.
The Vanity Fair magazine of 1868 to 1914 was subtitled 'A Weekly Show of Political, Social and Literary Wares'. Founded by Thomas Gibson...

Une Bonne Tasse de Thé
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 23 inches x 13.75 inches
Size including frame: 35 inches x 25.75 inches
A lovely portrait of a young woman pouring a cup of tea, by Pierre Louis Bouchard. The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person.
Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860). He then moved to Paris where he became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He also studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin...

Cherubs with Flower Garlands
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 19.5 inches x 29.25 inches
Size including frame: 25.5 inches x 35.25 inches
A beautiful painting of three cherubs or putti with flower garlands by Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens. The winged infants are shown holding rose blooms as they rest on a cloud.
Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was born in 1829 the son of Charles Lutyens, who was the Deputy Commissary General of the Forces and Frances Jane Fludger. With his family connection to the military it was no surprise that he joined the army in 1848 as Ensign, serving in the 20th Foot Regiment in Montreal, Canada. Whilst there, he met Mary Teresa Gallwey, daughter of Major Gallwey of Ireland and sister of Thomas Gallwey, the Governor of Montreal. They married on 28 November, 1852 and the couple went on to have 14 children in total. He returned to England having been promoted to Captain and lived in Hampshire where was appointed Instructor of Musketry to the regiment.
He retired from the army in 1855, moving to London in the same year where he lived at 4 Allen Terrace, Kensington. He began pursuing an artistic career and most likely took art and sculpture lessons as well as studying animal anatomy. He made his debut at the British Institution from 1860 and by 1861 was living at 6 Palace Garden Terraces in Kensington. In 1862, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, where he continued to exhibit regularly until 1903. He initially painted portraits but then developed his subjects to include animals, usually horses and hunting scenes. Many of the people in his paintings were notable horse owners such as King Edward and the Duke of Westminster as well as military figures. He is known to have sculpted clay models of animals which he used during his creative process. He also produced a number of scenes with cherubs which he became well known for.
By 1865, he had moved to 16 Onslow Square...

The Shepherd, English Victorian 19th Century Egg Tempera
Located in London, GB
Sir William Blake Richmond KCB, RA, PPRBSA
1842 - 1921
The Shepherd
Egg tempera on wooden panel, signed with initials bottom left
Image size: 8 ¼ x 5 ½ inches
Period gilt oak frame
A newly discovered work by the artist.
Sir William Blake Richmond KCB, RA, PPRBSA was an English portrait painter, sculptor and a designer of stained glass and mosaic. He is best known for his portrait work and decorative mosaics in St Paul's Cathedral in London.
He was the son of the portraitist George Richmond RA and studied at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1860s. Influenced by his father and by Sir John Everett Millais, he is best known for his mosaic decorations below the dome and in the apse of St Paul's Cathedral in London.
His father, George Richmond, was one of 'the Ancients' who were a group of artists who formed around the visionary artist and poet William Blake. Samuel Palmer was an other of the ancients and a close friend of the family.
Our painting could have been inspired by George Richmond’s engraving 'The Shepherd', 1827, but in our panel the shepherd is turned round facing away, and is playing a flute instead of resting on a staff. But the sheep and other elements are there.
It is also suggestive of Welby Sherman's engraving after Samuel Palmer of the same name and date, but here the shepherd is sitting but like ours turned away. William Blake's is an altogether happier image given the figure is playing to his sheep.
Our painting is playing with some of the same ideas and feels like the same sort of period, and the ‘fresco’ like chalk ground is interesting, as is the pen and ink finishing on the tempera. All three are strongly influenced by Blake's illustrations to Thornton's 'Virgil'. The shepherd and his flock are clearly based on Thenot and his sheep in the Frontispiece to Thornton.
Blake Richmond wrote:"If there be the least value in my pictures, it is due to such lovely early impressions derived from the sweet poetic work of many of my father's contemporaries, Calvert, Blake and others, whose shadows are substance still to me" [Sir William Blake Richmond, letter to his father, 50 years after the death of William Blake, from Stirling op. cit p. 28].
Richmond was given private art lessons by John Ruskin before attending the Royal Academy for three years. After that he spent a number of years in Italy, where an encounter with a shepherd called Beppino, 'a splendid speciman of a Sabine Shepherd', could also have gave him the inspiration for the painting we show here. Richmond recalls how he met Beppino on the hillside, and was invited to share the shade of the shepherd's capanna, a wooden hut. 'What a place! In an instant of time I was back into the age of kings, and I knew Romulus had lived and am sure that he lived in a hut exactly like this one'.
That night Richmond dined at Beppino's hut 'on roast kid, hard bread dipped in Roman wine, goat's cream and white ricotta'. The shepherd had such an impression on Richmond that he sought him out on a return visit to Italy some years later, but was saddened to hear that Beppino 'had joined his fore-fathers in the shades'.
He was moved to write the following, which perfectly expresses the mood of this painting and his tribute to a fleeting companion:
'Little events of this kind unite past times with present, create and emphasis continuity of human instincts, which seem to defy time and make travel so intensely interesting and invigorating to a citizen of this world. One need not go to the palace, far otherwise, or to cities and towns to discover the kernal of enduring civilisations. One finds it, if one wills to do so, in the backbone of the world, an ancient peasantry who have watched and still watch the progress of the stars'.
Richmond was influential in the early stages of the Arts and Crafts Movement in his selection of bold colours and materials for the mosaics in St. Paul's Cathedral and in his collaboration with James Powell and Sons...

Sheep Grazing on a Cliff Top
Oil on canvas, signed with monogram
Image size: 7.5 inches x 11.5 inches
Size including frame: 13.5 inches x 17.5 inches
A lovely landscape painting of sheep on a coastal cliff by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. The sheep and her two lambs are depicted against the backdrop of the sea with shipping and chalk cliffs in the distance. The location is likely to be the Devon coast, an area Jones visited often.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874, he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Some of the smaller more intimate galleries he exhibited at were Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson...

Still Life of Fruit & Flowers in a Basket
Oil on canvas, signed with monogram
Image size: 13.5 inches x 11.75 inches
Size including frame: 20.75 inches x 19 inches
An exquisitely painted still life of roses and fruit by Edward Ladell. Pink and yellow rose blooms are depicted with black and white grapes and a pear on a marble topped table. Behind them, a basket of fruit containing plums and a nectarine can also be seen.
Edward Ladell was born in Hasketon, Suffolk on 12 April, 1821 the son of Christmas Ladell a coachbuilder and his wife Mary Birch. He was a self-taught artist and initially worked in his father’s business in Colchester as an engraver. He is also believed to have worked as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester.
In 1848 he married Julianna Roofe and they spent their married life living at East Hill in Colchester. During his spare time he began producing still life paintings in the Dutch traditions and in 1856 made his debut at the Royal Academy with a ‘Study from Nature’. He also exhibited at the British Institute from 1857 and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1858.
Ladell’s exposure at the London galleries began earning him commissions and by 1861, he had become a full time artist. He was highly successful in his lifetime, earning many commissions and commanding high prices for his work. He became one of the best known still life painters of his generation.
During the late 1860’s, after the death of his first wife and child, he began teaching art. One of his pupils was Ellen Maria Levett who he later married in 1878 and together they had a son. His wife Ellen Ladell...
