ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

French Art Deco Antelope Huntress Sculpture, Spelter & Onyx, 1930

French Art Deco Antelope Huntress Sculpture, Spelter & Onyx, 1930

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

This impressive French Art Deco sculpture, created circa 1930, depicts a stylized huntress accompanied by a leaping antelope. With its dramatic movement, elongated forms, and striking geometric composition, the work exemplifies the fascination with exotic subjects that influenced French decorative arts during the interwar period. Scenes inspired by Africa and France’s former colonial territories became especially prominent in the late 1920s and early 1930s. This artistic trend reached its height during the 1931 Paris International Colonial Exhibition, which had a significant impact on French architecture, sculpture, furniture, and interior decoration. Viewed today within its historical context, this sculpture reflects both the visual language of the Art Deco period and the colonial imagery widely circulated in France at the time. The finely modeled female figure is rendered in spelter and presented in an energetic hunting pose, holding a bow beside the antelope. The dark patinated metal contrasts beautifully with the substantial stepped base, composed of richly veined marble and warm-toned onyx. The combination of sculptural metalwork and luxurious stone gives the piece a commanding architectural presence. The sculpture measures approximately 82 cm wide, 54 cm high, and 21 cm deep, equivalent to 32.3 inches wide, 21.2 inches high, and 8.2 inches deep. It weighs approximately 21.6 kilograms, or 47.6 pounds. The piece remains highly decorative and displays age-related wear consistent with its history. Small chips and losses are visible along the edges of the marble and onyx base. A bold and substantial French Art Deco huntress sculpture...

Loet Vanderveen Bronze Reclining Horse Sculpture Signed Numbered Limited Edition

By Franz Hagenauer, Loet Vanderveen

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

Loet Vanderveen Limited Edition Bronze Reclining Horse Sculpture, Signed & Numbered 230/500 A striking limited edition bronze horse sculpture by renowned Dutch-American sculptor Loet Vanderveen (1921–2015). Expertly cast in patinated bronze, the sculpture depicts a reclining horse with its head gracefully raised in a powerful, expressive pose, as if neighing, capturing both strength and serenity through Vanderveen's distinctive stylized aesthetic. Known for his masterful interpretations of wildlife, Vanderveen combined the elegance of Art Deco, the simplified forms of Mid-Century Modern design, and subtle Cubist influences to create sculptures celebrated for their timeless appeal. The rich dark patina is beautifully contrasted by warm bronze highlights on the tail, emphasizing the refined modeling and exceptional craftsmanship. This example is signed "Loet ©" and numbered 230/500 on the underside, from a strictly limited edition of only 500 casts. Highly collectible, Vanderveen's bronze animal sculptures are sought after by collectors of modern sculpture, equestrian art, and fine decorative objects. Perfect for display on a desk, bookshelf, mantel, or cocktail table, this elegant bronze horse makes a sophisticated statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
