How Much is a Leather Armchair Chair?
Finding the Right Seating for You
With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.
Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.
Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.
With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.
Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.
No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023Whether an armchair is an accent chair varies from piece to piece. Any chair with arms is an armchair, while an accent chair is a decorative chair typically used in a seating area. Armchairs include dining chairs with arms as well as accent chairs, and some accent chairs don't have arms at all. Only a decorative seating area chair with arms can be called both an armchair and an accent chair. Shop a large collection of chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021The best leather for chairs is going to depend on your personal preference. While choosing the leather for a chair, try to think of what you want out of your chair. While pigmented leather is the most durable, aniline leather looks more natural and preserves the hide of the animal. Semi-aniline on the other hand is more durable than aniline leather and it maintains the natural look. On 1stDibs, you can find a wide variety of leather chairs.
- Are leather chairs worth it?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertOctober 30, 2024Many people believe that leather chairs are worth it. Whether you're looking for accent chairs for a seating area, dining chairs to pair with your dining room table or an office chair to place at your desk, leather chairs can add to the overall visual appeal of a room, thanks to their texture. Leather is also fairly easy to wipe clean, and high-quality types, such as full-grain and top-grain leather, can stand the test of time. However, there are plenty of alternatives to leather upholstery available. Considering durability, comfort, appearance and maintenance requirements, as well as your budget, will help you select the right chair for any space. Explore a large collection of leather chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023The difference between an armchair and an accent chair comes down to the specificity of the terms. An accent chair is any decorative chair designed to provide comfortable seating in living rooms and other spaces (armchairs can be accent chairs). An armchair is merely any chair that has armrests. Many different styles of armchairs have been made over the years. Find a wide range of armchairs and accent chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024The difference between a lounge chair and an armchair is the specificity of the term. A lounge chair is a type of comfortable seat that allows a user to relax. It typically features an angled seat that puts the user in a reclined position. Armchair is the term for any seating area chair framed by arms. Most lounge chairs are armchairs. However, there are also many armchairs with straight backs that don't fit the definition of a lounge chair. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of lounge chairs and armchairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023There is no difference between a club chair and an armchair; a club chair is a type of armchair. An armchair is any chair with arms, while a club chair is a wide, comfortable type of armchair that is typically clad in leather and features thick upholstery. All club chairs are armchairs, but not all armchairs are club chairs. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of club chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024The difference between an armchair and an easy chair lies in the specificity of the terms. In living room furniture nomenclature, an armchair is any upholstered chair framed by a pair of arms. The term easy chair usually refers to a large armchair with comfortable cushioning. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of easy chairs and other armchairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021A good office chair should be comfortable with a high back, armrests and cushioned seating. Many leather office chairs can be called the best by different people depending on what appeals to them. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage leather office chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023Whether leather is good for dining chairs is largely a matter of personal opinion. However, many people find leather to be easy to wipe clean and appreciate its texture and appearance. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of leather dining chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024Many furniture lovers feel that leather dining chairs are worth it. Due to its natural beauty, leather can elevate dining rooms and add interest to interior designs by bringing in a new texture. Leather is also fairly easy to wipe clean, and top-grain and full-grain upholstery often hold up well to the effects of frequent use. Keep in mind that other factors contribute to the overall quality of a chair, such as its frame materials and construction methods. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of leather dining chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021The best leather recliner chair will really be a matter of preference — what kind of recliner do you need?
