Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Larsen Sofa Sofa
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024
Why it is called a sofa is due to the history of the term. Sofa originated from the Arabic word soffa, which describes a low seat covered with plush pillows. French makers began producing their own versions of these furnishings in the 17th century, and by the 18th century, they had spread to other areas in Europe and were being referred to as sofas. Find a wide variety of sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
By the strictest definition, a sofa is not a chair. Generally, a chair is a seating solution for one person. Since a sofa seats more than one person at a time, it usually isn't considered a chair. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of antique, vintage and contemporary chairs and sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024
No one knows for sure when the first sofa was invented. However, ancient versions of the furniture date back to 2000 B.C. in Egypt. Generally, Jay Wellingdon Couch receives credit for inventing the modern sofa in 1895. People even use his surname, Couch, as another name for the sofa. Explore a large selection of couches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
The most comfortable sofa is a personal choice and will depend upon the sofa seat’s depth and height, filling and upholstery, back height and the back-pitch angle to recline or not to recline. Sofas that originated in countries such as France during the 17th century were more integral to decor than they were to comfort. Today, options abound when it comes to style, material and comfort. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique, vintage and modern sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A sofa plinth is a low base or pedestal that a sofa rests on. It borrows its name from a platform used to support an arch in classical architecture. People also call statue bases plinths. On 1stDibs, find a range of antique and vintage sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
Also known as living room suites or a three-piece suite, sofa suites are usually sofas with two matching chairs. On 1stDibs you will find a variety of options for antique, new and vintage sofa suites.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024
A sofa armchair is a type of armchair. Specifically, the term describes an armchair with thick cushions on its backrest and seat and a deep frame that provides plenty of space for the user to settle in and relax. As a result, it offers the comfort typically associated with a sofa in a single-seat design, which is how this type of accent chair gets its name. Find a large selection of armchairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A serpentine sofa is an upholstered seating solution with a curvy shape reminiscent of the letter “S.” Vladimir Kagan designed the piece of furniture in 1950, and it has since become one of the best-known couches of the mid-century period. On 1stDibs, find a range of serpentine sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
In a tufted sofa, the upholstery fabric is tightly pulled and folded into a geometric pattern and secured by buttons. The cushions on a tufted sofa remain plump and quite comfortable over time. Shop a collection of antique, vintage and contemporary tufted sofas from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 8, 2024
A Dune sofa is not a particular type of sofa. Instead, it is a style name that several furniture makers have given to pieces they have produced. Among these makers are Nor11, Maiden Home and Ralph Pucci. You may also see the word “dune” used to indicate the color of a sofa. In this context, the term likely refers to a sandy beige shade.

Mid-century modern furniture and Space Age design enthusiasts know French designer Pierre Paulin for his low-slung Dune seating collection, which is a favorite of musician Frank Ocean. Paulin’s Dune series features four different interchangeable modules for a custom arrangement.

On 1stDibs, find a large selection of sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
A chaise, also known as a chaise longue (or, as it is sometimes spelled in the United States, a “chaise lounge”), is a long, upholstered sofa in the shape of a chair that can be used to prop one's legs upon. The name "chaise" refers to any long, reclining chair in modern French interior design, and the English translation is "long chair."
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A recamier sofa is a type of couch that features a high curved headrest and a low footrest. This type of sofa is sometimes backless that can be kept flat across the wall. A recamier sofa looks great in a living room, bedroom, study or elsewhere in your home. Shop a range of antique and vintage recamier sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A modular sofa is an upholstered seating solution meant to accommodate two or more people. Unlike standard sofas, modular designs feature multiple individual pieces that you can mix, match and arrange into different shapes and configurations. You will sometimes see them called sectional sofas. Find a range of modular sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A studio sofa is similar to a futon in that it’s multifunctional. Studio sofas can be converted into a double bed by flattening out the frame.
