Carlo Cignani Figurative Paintings
Italian, 1628-1719
Carlo Cignani (Bologna, May 15, 1628 - Forlì, September 6, 1719) was an Italian painter, considered the greatest Bolognese painter of the eighteenth century.
Art historians credit Cignani for having led a stylistic and taste change that took place around 1670 in the context of the Bolognese school, which allowed painters to move away from the influences of the Renian tradition to bring them closer to the academic spirit.
Trained with Giovanni Battista del Cairo and Francesco Albani, he was strongly influenced by Annibale Carracci, Correggio and, for the perspective from below and for the use of color, of the works of Melozzo da Forlì. Cignani, therefore, also inserted himself in the tradition of the Forlì school, to whose development he contributed with his own work.
After his early Baroque works in Bologna, he worked in Rome from 1662 where he was prince of the Academy of San Luca in 1710.
From 1665 he was active again in Bologna, then in Parma (1678-1681).
He spent his last period in Forlì, also for the realization of his great masterpiece, the fresco in the dome of the chapel of the Madonna del Fuoco in the Cathedral. In the Civic Art Gallery of Forlì, on the other hand, you can see the Coronation of Santa Rosa canvas and a self-portrait. Of him, but probably with the help of his son Felice Cignani, is The Virgin and San Filippo Neri, in the same picture gallery. Then there is L'Aurora that flies towards the blue to bring light and life to the world (1672-1674), in the Albicini palace, also in Forlì. The Aurora "represents at its highest degree the highly refined formal idealism" of Cignani, thus resulting "one of the most beautiful figurative inventions of seventeenth-century Italian art" [3].
The San Giovannino, "natural large" for Mons. Rasponi, recently found on the antiques market, belongs to this period; previously considered lost, it is now in a private collection in Cesena, Andrea Emiliani 2010.to
