Manuel Barthold Figurative Paintings

American, 1874-1947

Born in Moscow in 1874, Manuel Barthold's family emigrated to the United States. He was an American citizen even though later, he was given the French nationality. Like many American painters at the end of the 19th century, he came to Paris, where he studied with Auguste Cormon and Jean-Paul Laurens. Barthold won numerous prestigious prizes such as a Silver medal at the National Academy of Design (New York in 1894), a Gold medal at the Salons des Artistes Français as an American (Paris in 1904), a Silver medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts (Liège, Belgium, in 1905) and a Silver medal at the International Exhibition (1910). In Britain, he exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Royal Academy of Arts.
