Margaret Cox Herrick Paintings

Margaret Cox Herrick was born in San Francisco, California, on June 24, 1865. She was the daughter of artist William F. Herrick. She studied at the local School of Design under Virgil Williams, Emil Carlsen, and Arthur Mathews, as well as in the studios of Wm Keith, Frederick Yates, and Mary Curtis Richardson. She further studied at the Art Students League of New York and also in Europe. Working in oil and watercolor, she produced landscapes, portraits, figure studies, and still lifes. Her works were exhibited at the Piedmont Art Gallery in Oakland (1907); California Artists, Golden Gate Park Museum (1915); San Francisco Art Association (1904-23); Oakland Art Gallery (1939); Golden Gate International Exposition (1939); Society for Sanity in Art, CPLH (1940). Her major artworks include Lunette at the YWCA, Oakland; Portrait of Rev. J.K. McLean at the First Congregational Church, Oakland; Portrait of Herbert Hoover at the Kansas City Convention Hall and Portrait of Charles Lindbergh at the Veterans Home, Livermore. After the earthquake of 1906, she moved across the Bay to a home in Piedmont, California, at 312 Pacific Avenue and maintained a studio in Oakland at 1302 12th Street. A spinster, Herrick died in Piedmont on June 16, 1950.

Born in 1883 in Denmark to artistically inclined parents, Johann Berthelsen would become a widely successful singer, teacher, and painter. After his parents divorced, his mother brought Berthelsen and his siblings with her to the United States in 1890, eventually settling in Wisconsin. At eighteen, Berthelsen moved to Chicago in the hope of becoming an actor, but a friend at the Chicago Musical College convinced him to audition at his school. Berthelsen received a full scholarship and enrolled at the college, where he was awarded the Gold Medal twice. After graduating, he had an active career traveling across the United States and Canada performing in operas and concerts, before joining the voice faculty at his alma mater in 1910. It was built in 1766 as the chapel building of Trinity Church, located at 209 Broadway, between Fulton Street and Vesey Street, in Lower Manhattan, New York City. An iconic scene that so many have come to love and cherish. The artist was truly a master of capturing New York in all of its glory throughout the seasons. This piece is executed whimsically, yet dramatically evoking an emotion of wonder and beauty. They would eventually move to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups.
