Space Age Building and Garden Elements

SPACE AGE STYLE

Vintage Space Age furniture captured post–World War II optimism with swooping shapes, bowed lines and experimentation with new materials including plastic and fiberglass.

From the launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957 to the landing of Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969, the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States propelled advancements in technology that transformed culture. Space Age design encompassed fashion, architecture, cars, furniture and objects for the home, bringing wonder and hope for the future into everyday life.

Coinciding with Pop art, Space Age style featured bold colors and forms. Eero Aarnio’s Ball chair, which debuted in 1966, used molded fiberglass for a capsule-like space while Verner Panton’s 1959 Panton chair was a single piece of molded plastic for a gravity-defying S shape. Red versions of Olivier Mourgue’s 1964 Djinn chair were futuristic enough to appear on the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Today, Joe Colombo is revered as a master of modern Italian design thanks to the provocative modular furniture pieces he created, such as the Tube chair and the Elda armchair, both of which embody the future-forward spirit of the Space Age.

The Space Age spirit extended to home building too. The futuristic Case Study Houses, which were designed by the likes of Pierre Koenig, Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Whitney R. Smith, are considered a high point of modernism and the Southern California lifestyle.

Sometimes the nods to space exploration were more literal, like moon and star motifs or the 1965 Eclisse lamp by Vico Magistretti that saw the mid-century Italian designer integrating a movable inner shade to “eclipse” the light source. Alongside the pioneering moon missions, JVC manufactured the Videosphere portable television reminiscent of the Apollo 11 space helmets.

Although the style faded in the 1970s — with the 1975 joining of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts signaling a new era of cooperation and the global oil crisis impacting the availability of plastics — the era’s innovations influenced designers into the 21st century such as Zaha Hadid and Djivan Schapira.

Dedon "Obelisk" Garden Furniture
By DEDON, Frank Ligthart
Located in Hanover, MA
BG GALLERIES SALE PRICE THROUGH 30 April 2024 The Obelisk designed by Frank Ligthart for Dedon, 2008. No longer in production. It is composed of two pairs of matching high- and low-back chairs and a conical table. The base of the table supports all the chairs when stacked into its sculptural shape for storage. We also have available separately a near complete additional Obelisk consisting of three of the S chairs and one M chair plus the table. Image 9 shows the complete Obelisk plus the spare table and chairs. Best of both worlds is to have the spare set for seating together with the complete Obelisk as sculpture, until additional seating is required. Image 8 shows the "spare" set which includes 3 "S" chairs (instead of 2) and 1 "M" chair (instead of 2) and one table base. The discounted price for the spare set on its own is $3800. The spare set will not stack to form the obelisk because that requires two of each chair. This is the ultra-chic original space-saving solution for garden, pool or terrace furniture...

'BANGA' Modular Space Age Architecture, Carlo Zappa Bungalow Int, 1971, Italy
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Many Avant Garde architects and designers of the 1960s / 70s became fascinated with the idea of minimal living, a secluded retreat, escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relaxation in the middle of nature. Thanks to new pliable materials, plastics, with their free and easy formability, lightness and especially their novelty, they developed micro bungalows and houses as either secondary vacation homes or for use in gardens. Italian developer Carlo Zappa undertook the challenge of designing and producing such a micro bungalow which eventually became commonly known as 'BANGA' .The first models rolled off the production line in 1971 and went through three production phases before production eventually ceased in 1985. Carlo Zappa not only developed the initial project, but personally executed the moulds, construction solutions, all the services detailing ie electrical, plumbing and metal hardware. Zappa's micro bungalow featured a total of 8.1 square meters of floor space. It offered space for up to three people thanks to a bunk bed, which could be folded down as a sofa during the day. A small bathroom with wash basin, shower / toilet, a small kitchen unit with sink and water heater...

1968. rare prefab house Nikolaos Xasteros
By Nikolaos Xasteros
Located in Perpignan, FR
THE XASTEROS HOUSE Made from fibreglass and measuring 50m, the Xasteros House is something of a rarity. it is believed that no more than ten exambles were ever manufactured The patent for the design was registered in September 1969 for a company called Alta, which whom Nikolaos Xasteros collaborated. Between 1973 and 1978. he went on to produce them under his own name. Originally, the interior was divided into a sitting room, small kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Some 15 years ago, one of the structures was discovered abandoned in a forest close to the seaside resort of Loutraki to the west of Athens. After the interior was gutted, the house was exhibited at the 2nd Athens Biennale in 2009 by the Greek architecture collective, Errands. Rather enigmatically, the group lost track of it soon after it was dismantled and its whereabouts today are unknown. Apart from the one at Terra Remota, only one other example is believed to exist for certain today. Located directly on the coast in Kalyvia Thorikou, it has been integrated into a larger structure and now sits on a platform to which it is linked via a staircase. Rare prefabricated living unit by the Greek architect Nikolaos Xasteros dating from 1968. (school of architecture of Paris 1953) The set can be dismantled and transported on a 13m flatbed truck or container. area: 40 m2 dimensions diameter 8m Height: 4m50 Assembly time: 7 to 10 days (4 people) Lifting gear required for assembly The house consists of the following elements: - 2 fiberglass shell roof elements...
