Antique Qianlong Amsterdam Bont Porcelain Dish Willem IV of Orange & Wife, 18thC
Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland
A very nicely made 18th century Qianlong Amsterdam Bont porcelain plate with a rare scene of stadholder Willem IV of Orange and his wife. Well documented in the literature these kind of European scenes. We take a look at Amsterdams Bont porcelain from China. A relatively unknown niche of Chinese porcelain from ca 1680-1740 that was partly decorated in Europe. Because mainstream Chinese collectors have yet to discover the historical significance of these wares they are relatively easy to find in Holland. While also being highly interesting and of often super quality and with an amazing array of decorations. Amsterdams Bont is a name given to porcelain partly decorated in the Netherlands (most likely in cities like Delft, Haarlem, Makkum). Because Amsterdam was at this moment in time the trade centre of the western world and also of the porcelain trade a lot of this over enamelling was probably commissioned by Amsterdam merchants, to reap higher profits on otherwise boring Chinese wares. The name Amsterdam Bont probably derives from the fact that these type of decorated ware was sold by Amsterdam Merchants. Amsterdam Bont consists of either blanc or under glaze blue decorated Chinese porcelain of basic quality, that was later enhanced with red and sometimes other colours in the Netherlands. It must not be mistaken for other type of Chinese & Japanese blanc wares decorated in Europe. Those we simply call European Decorated Chinese porcelain. Amsterdam Bont really is easily recognisable by its colour and style. An interesting side note is that a similar process of overdecorating with red was done in London in more or less the same colours. Method of manufacturing. This enhancemend was done on “petit feux” or small fire at a lower temperature. This technique of baking enamels on a lower temperature that was perfected in the Delft around 1670-1680 to compete with the colourfull Japanese porcelain of the time. At the turn of the 17th c Chinese porcelain...

Huge Kaneaki Fujimori Collection Art Glass Platter Kato Kogei Japan, 1985
Located in Melbourne, AU
Just wow! A huge, gorgeously colourful Kaneaki Fujimori platter. This will display equally well standing, hanging or flat (we prefer it flat because this emphasises the generous size). We love the shocking white of the background which makes the colours pop. We love the smooth gloss of the glass. We love the slightly off-kilter and ovoid shape. It’s a total winner! Kaneaki Fujimori for Kato Kogei 1980s - a classic piece of Japanese postmodern Art Glass. Signature etched to base and original sticker also attached. Red, Green, Yellow and Black are swirled through clear glass, over a milky-white background. Delicious and punchy. Not for the faint-hearted decorator. This piece is loud and assertive. Delightful and fun, with extravagant size and a glossy smooth finish to reflect light and attract the eye. There are some natural flaws which we’ve tried to illustrate in images. These include numerous small bubbles, mots and blemishes. The images are an example, with match-head for scale. Comes with a lucite stand to raise the plate a little higher off surfaces if desired. Kaneaki Fujimori is one of Japan’s preeminent artists and designers of the 20th century. Fujimori was born in Japan in 1935, graduating college in 1956. He majored in oil painting. He travelled to the US and worked in Chicago, Illinois, as a designer for a major ceramics firm. He returned to Japan in 1963, and became a freelance designer for various companies in Nagoya. At age 19, he had won the national art award (for painting) in Japan. Many other awards followed through the 1980s. At the time of the production of this work, he was the director of Kato Kogai, a ceramics and glassware company which was a major supplier to the international market during the 1980s. Reference to his work can be found in the book ‘1950s Then and Now’ by Richard Horn, a publication from the 1980s which compares original 1950s design with new 1980s design done in the 1950s style. He is most well known outside Japan for his lively 1980s ceramics...

Joseph Morel for Zellique Pulled Feather Bowl, American Studio Art Glass, 1988
By Zellique Studio 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage art glass bowl features striking Art Deco style 5-lobed pulled feather decor in blue, purple, and Bordeau red glass, enclosed in clear glass. The center of the bowl has a convex element, adding an Op-Art element to the composition. The design of the bowl is reminiscent of the pulled feather pieces that Morel created while at Orient & Plume, but the choice of semi-transparent and clear glass instead of colored iridescent glass, used in his earlier works, shows a Post Modern influence and a more contemporary take on the American Art Nouveau glass tradition. The bowl is signed in etching by the artist on the bottom with "Zellique Studio JM 8-1988 FBVI98". Joseph Morel is an established American glass artist, based in California. He began his career in glass artist at California State University, Chico; after graduating in 1973, he worked at Orient & Flume Art Glass, an internationally renowned glass studio, where he was mentored by visiting European glass masters over the next seven years. Orient & Flume early work was directed toward recreating the silver-luster or iridescent glass of turn-of-the-century artists like Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz, for example, Tiffany Cypriote glass and Steuben Aurenes. The company regularly drew in other artists with various skills in working glass, creating learning opportunities for their employees. In 1980, Morel opened Zellique Art Glass in Benicia, California, where he was able to utilize his skills a glass designer. As the American art glass movement grew, other glass studios opened in Bay Area in 1980s - 1990s; in early 2000s there were five glassblowing studios in Benicia: Zellique Art Glass, Lindsay Art Glass, Nourot Glass, Opal, and Smyers Glass...

Antique and Vintage Bowls and Baskets

As decorative objects in your space, antique, new and vintage bowls and baskets make for a versatile addition to any corner of your living room, dining room or the console table in your foyer or entryway. Whether they’re positioned as a focal point for the family dining table or an accent on the shelving in your home office, or perhaps you’re just endeavoring to add minimalist ceramics throughout your home, an alluring art-glass centerpiece bowl or antique rustic fisherman’s basket is an easy way to elevate high-trafficked areas of your apartment or house.

Aside from the obvious functionality that a decorative bowl or basket brings to your kitchen, displaying such items behind the glass doors of a vintage storage cabinet or on your open kitchen shelving allows you to add a touch of personality and flair to the space, particularly if you’re accustomed to serving cocktails while you cook or if the kitchen is a common area for gathering and unpacking the events of the day.

As your bookcase is so much more than a place to, well, store books, adding a decorative bowl or basket — a mid-century modern work or an Art Nouveau–-era piece designed by French art-glass makers Daum — to the space where you keep your art monographs and coveted first editions can draw attention to your treasured library.

For the tranquil California coastal-style interiors you’ve worked so hard to create, fill a hand-carved wooden bowl on your console table with glass fishing floats or seashells, while a tall woven vessel by your front door can be populated with leafy green plants.

For anywhere and everywhere in your home, find a wide variety of antique or modern decorative baskets and bowls on 1stDibs today.
