Art Deco Decorative Boxes

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900
Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900

Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900

Located in Colorado Springs, CO

Offered is a stunning Sheffield silver keepsake box dating to 1900, with associated hallmark. This small box includes a clean interior and rounded corners. The box is free of names or initials, but would have been used to house keepsakes such as jewelry or cufflinks. A well maintained, elegant piece, this antique silver box is an excellent addition to any silver collection. Trinket or keepsake boxes have taken on many forms since their first conception in ancient times. However their purpose remains the same; to store jewelry and other items precious to the owner. Originally, these boxes were used specifically for jewelry. These were in common use as early as 5000 BC in Ancient Egypt, when the majority of Egyptians, both male and female, wore jewelry. Boxes were used to keep these gemstone encrusted items safe. In Ancient Rome, jewelry was a status symbol. Rings and brooches were utilized to represent ones status in society. Again, boxes were needed for security and storage purposes. Finding early examples of these are quite rare. Victorian and Edwardian examples of trinket boxes are far more common. This is because owning jewellery was a luxury until the Victorian era- let alone possessing so much a box was needed to store it all. Fine jewelry and other items became available to the masses after the industrial revolution due to the reduction in production costs. This led to a demand for trinket boxes, which were much smaller than jewelry boxes and therefore better suited to the needs of the middle class who did not yet possess an abundance of jewelry. In Victorian households, collectables and other items of interested were also stashed inside these boxes. This is why they are known as trinket or keepsake boxes, rather than just jewelry boxes, although of course jewelry was also stored in them. Trinket boxes were produced in large numbers around this time. Many were lined with colored plush or velvet or rich wood. More elaborate designs had interior divisions and trays for rings and other pieces of jewellery. It was also common to see trinket boxes so small that they could only contain one item, such as a single ring. Ornate exteriors were created to reflect the value of the trinket boxes contents. The Edwardian era saw the introduction of new styles of trinket box. These included small circular or oblong boxes...

Art Deco Perfection: 1939 Enamel Travel Suitcase Makeup Compact Case MUST SEE!

Located in Red Lion, PA

Art Deco Perfection: 1939 Enamel Travel Suitcase Makeup Compact Case, MUST SEE! An extraordinary embodiment of Jazz Age glamour, bon vivant luxury, and Art Deco wanderlust, this rare 1939 enamel travel suitcase makeup compact represents the pinnacle of 1930s design imagination. Objects of this caliber, playful yet exquisitely executed, are the very heart of serious Art Deco collecting, and it truly does not get better than this. Expertly hand-painted enamel, the compact is modeled as a miniature leather travel suitcase, complete with gold-tone corner protectors, buckled straps, and a sculptural handle that doubles as the opening mechanism. Tipping the handle gently releases the case, revealing a mirror-lined interior and a fully intact, original cosmetic arrangement: a compartment of nude-toned face powder (still present and loose), a smaller compartment of vivid rose blush with its original factory paper liner, and a petite puff, appearing barely used, if at all. The exterior is nothing short of breathtaking. The “leather” surface is entirely hand-painted, featuring linear horizontal brushstrokes on either side and a bold central squiggle motif, evoking the texture of fine luggage from the era. Encircling the case are brilliantly graphic Art Deco travel decals: Paris, London, New York, Roma, Monte Carlo, the Queen Mary, Havanna Club, and, most notably, the legendary French Art Deco ocean liner Normandie, each rendered in vivid color and crisp geometry. These travel motifs “dance” around a central engraved cartouche reading “Topaz Club ’39”, a tantalizing and deeply evocative personalization. During the 1930s, international travel became the ultimate symbol of sophistication and freedom, fueled by luxury steamships, glamorous hotels, elite clubs, and the rise of the cosmopolitan traveler. Suitcases plastered with travel labels became icons of worldliness, instantly signaling status, adventure, and taste. Art Deco embraced this imagery wholeheartedly, using bold typography, streamlined vessels, and exotic destinations to express modern life at its most glamorous. Novelty luxury pieces like this compact translated that ideal into intimate objects, portable symbols of privilege and pleasure. Comparable in spirit to the finest Cartier vanity cases...
