This exceptional antique Chinese Export Silver (CES) box has a plain rectangular form. The surface of the body is encompassed with exceptional chased oriental Chinese dragon designs amidst clouds, all on a matte background; each panel bears a plain and unembellished border. This antique silver box is fitted with a hinged silver cover, bearing a continuation of cloud ornamentation to the side panels. The upper plateau of the cover is ornamented with two further dragon designs accented with impressive emanating whiskers, incorporating a circular vacant cartouche to the centre. Offered is a stunning Sheffield silver keepsake box dating to 1900, with associated hallmark. This small box includes a clean interior and rounded corners. The box is free of names or initials, but would have been used to house keepsakes such as jewelry or cufflinks. A well maintained, elegant piece, this antique silver box is an excellent addition to any silver collection. Trinket or keepsake boxes have taken on many forms since their first conception in ancient times. However their purpose remains the same; to store jewelry and other items precious to the owner. Originally, these boxes were used specifically for jewelry. These were in common use as early as 5000 BC in Ancient Egypt, when the majority of Egyptians, both male and female, wore jewelry. Boxes were used to keep these gemstone encrusted items safe. In Ancient Rome, jewelry was a status symbol. Rings and brooches were utilized to represent ones status in society. Again, boxes were needed for security and storage purposes. Finding early examples of these are quite rare. Victorian and Edwardian examples of trinket boxes are far more common. This is because owning jewellery was a luxury until the Victorian era- let alone possessing so much a box was needed to store it all. Fine jewelry and other items became available to the masses after the industrial revolution due to the reduction in production costs. This led to a demand for trinket boxes, which were much smaller than jewelry boxes and therefore better suited to the needs of the middle class who did not yet possess an abundance of jewelry. In Victorian households, collectables and other items of interested were also stashed inside these boxes. This is why they are known as trinket or keepsake boxes, rather than just jewelry boxes, although of course jewelry was also stored in them. Trinket boxes were produced in large numbers around this time. Many were lined with colored plush or velvet or rich wood. More elaborate designs had interior divisions and trays for rings and other pieces of jewellery. It was also common to see trinket boxes so small that they could only contain one item, such as a single ring. Ornate exteriors were created to reflect the value of the trinket boxes contents. The Edwardian era saw the introduction of new styles of trinket box. These included small circular or oblong boxes...

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of versatile antique English sterling silver three-light candelabra; an addition to our diverse candle holders collection. These exceptional antique cast sterling silver candelabra have a classical square form to a knopped column onto a stepped swept square foot, in the highly desirable classic English style. Each impressive three light candelabrum retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit scrolling leaf decorated arms. The branches (labra) support two circular waisted capitals, each encompassed with bands of applied gadroon decoration. The capitals are fitted with the original hallmarked push fit square-shaped sconces, embellished with an undulating swept decoration. Each capital of these antique candelabra centrepieces surmounts an impressive square drip pan, featuring identical ornamentation to that of the sconces. Each Victorian candelabrum is fitted with a third detachable central elevated capital and drip pan. These versatile three-light Victorian candelabra can be used as silver candlesticks once the arms are detached. The panelled waisted column of each candlestick is encompassed with further undulating ornamentation and gadroon decoration to the knops. The spiralling swept portion of the foot surmounts a plain stepped base, embellished with gadroon decoration to a plain collet style rim. These antique silver candlesticks do not have weighted bases. The base of each candlestick was made by William Brown in 1825 and the labra were crafted by Walker & Tolhurst Ltd (Walter Walker & Brownfield Tolhurst) in 1896*. These tall sterling silver candelabra, which can be separated into individual candlesticks, are a versatile and sophisticated gift for weddings, anniversaries or milestone occasions. Use them as dramatic centrepieces for candlelit dinners or display the candlesticks individually on a mantel, sideboard or table. * Candlesticks were widely produced and used in the early 19th century, with designs growing more elaborate as moulded candles gained popularity. To accommodate changing tastes, it was not unusual for matching candelabra to be commissioned at a later date, providing versatility and reflecting the Victorian preference for elaborate centrepieces.
