This abstract sculpture in Carrara marble was sculpted ‘en taille directe’ by the Belgian artist Jan Keustermans. He named it Requiem. The large sculpture is signed and dated, Jake 2001. It is a unique piece. It is the first time that Jan Keustermans and his family offer a selection of sculptures, directly from the artist’s atelier. Jan Alfons Keustermans (°1940) is a Belgian sculptor, medalist and draftsman. He studied at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp and until 2000 he was director of the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Turnhout. He has won several art prizes for sculpture and participated in group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. He has created more than 850 works. In 1994, he won the Ministry of Finance’s competition for a portrait of King Albert II on the Belgian currency. In 1997 he designed a similar version for the euro coin. A contemporary hand-woven bamboo sculpture in an organic form by Japanese bamboo artist Mimura Chikuho (1973-). Named "Cloud on the Peak", the piece was made as one of his series in 2004. Entirely hand-woven in irregular plaiting, the artist challenged the traditional bamboo basket making and elevated it into modern abstract sculpture. The minimalist donut form resembles the hat-shaped cloud formed around the peak of the mountain (often seen on Fujisan in Japanese art). It displays a wonderful subtle undulation and irregularity in its organic shape, achieved by a mastery of the traditional technique. The irregular plaiting appears chaotic in its busy crossing patterns yet as a whole, the piece strangely quiet and introverted, demanding contemplation from the viewer. This stellar powerful and conversational silvered bronze and sterling silver limited edition abstracted love lips or heart sculpture was commissioned by Christofle and designed and executed by a young Chinese woman artist named Xiao Hui Wang. This is the first time in Christofle history that a young Chinese artist, albeit a woman was asked to create this commission. It is signed and numbered on the bottom. It is signed with the artists name not terribly legible, then Christofle then 08/66 then France. The base is very heavy and is sterling silver. The top is silvered bronze and was lacquered. The base cannot be lacquered because it is sterling silver. We have not seen another one on line or anywhere else. The original monumental sculpture was first created on the occasion of the Shanghai Expo and stands elegantly in monumental form at the flagship Hilton in Singapore.
